Introductionm20ffa8b96797a7db_1528450127855_0Introduction

The student search information about tables. What are they used for? In what way do they allow to order information?

After a short discussion about the tables the students define what a table is and what elements it is composed of.

A table is a method of the arrangement of data in cells. The cells aligned horizontally form a row, while the cells aligned vertically form a column. The cells are separated by horizontal and vertical lines (borders), which may not be invisible. The first row (column) is called a header row (column).m20ffa8b96797a7db_1527752263647_0A table is a method of the arrangement of data in cells. The students run the slideshow and learn the methods of inserting a tableinserting a tableinserting a table. Their task is to practice all the presented methods in a text editor.

When a table is inserted in the text and the cursor is placed in it, the Table Tools menu will pop up. There you will find options enabling formatting the table, divided into two tabs: Design and Layout.

Selecting particular table elements

You can select the particular elements of a table by using:

– the mouse,
– the keyboard (CTRL + the arrow keys),
– the Select option (you can select a cellcellcell, a rowrowrow, a columncolumncolumn or a tabletabletable).

Merging and splitting table cellscellcells

Merging combines two or more cells to create a single cell. In order to merge several cells, you must select them and click Merge Cells. Every cell can be also split into more cells. After selecting the cells you want to divide, click Split Cells.

Adding columns and rows to the tableClick in a cell which is to the right or above where you want to insert a row or a column.  Under Table Tools select the Layout tab. Click on the arrow in the right bottom corner of the Rows and Columns group and select one of the options:– insert a row,– insert a column.m20ffa8b96797a7db_1527752256679_0Adding columns and rows to the tableClick in a cell which is to the right or above where you want to insert a row or a column.  Under Table Tools select the Layout tab. Click on the arrow in the right bottom corner of the Rows and Columns group and select one of the options:– insert a row,– insert a column.

Deleting columns and rows in a table

Click in any cellcellcell of the row or columncolumncolumn that you want to delete. Then click the Layout tab under Table Tools. Select the Delete option, and then click the option from the drop‑down list:

– Delete ColumnscolumnColumns,
– Delete RowsrowRows,
– Delete CellscellCells,
– Delete TabletableTable.

Formatting tables

The most often performed operations allowing to modify a table include:

– change the row height,
– change the column width,
– add or remove bordersborderborders,
– add shadingshadingshading to cells.

Instruction

The students describe the consecutive steps to create a crossword in a text editor.

1. Specify the number of columns and rows.

2. Insert a table containing the number of columns and rows calculated earlier.

3. Select the table and set the same width and height (1 cm) for all cellscellcells in Table Properties.

4. Delete unnecessary bordersborderborders (by using the Eraser tool).

5. Shade the cells for the solution.

Based on the above algorithm the students create a crossword whose solution is which the word TABLES is the solution. They choose the clues for the crossword independently.

Formatting a tableformatting a tableFormatting a table by using table styles

You can format the table you have created by using table styles. On the Design tab under Table Tools there is a group of options Table Styles. By pointing one of the preliminary formatted table styles with the pointer of the mouse you can view your table formatted with the applied style.

Tables are one of the most popular means of conveying information. We come across them every day, for example when we use forms, schedules and timetables.
