Task
How do various mirrormirrormirror surfaces modify a mirror image?

Do the following exercises, think it over and draw conclusions.

1. Put on a table a smooth piece of aluminium foil. Look at your mirror image. Next, crumple the foil and look at it once again. What have you noticed?

2. Put a shiny Christmas tree ball at eye level and look at your mirrormirrormirror image. Then, take a mat Christmas tree ball and repeat the observation. What have you noticed?

3. Imagine yourself standing at the lake shore on a sunny, windless day. What would you see at the lake surfacesurfacesurface? How will the mirrormirrormirror image change when it starts to be windy?

Answer:
1. On a smooth aluminium foil you can see the mirrormirrormirror image of your face. At crumpled foil you do not observe an image anymore.

2. On a shiny Christmas tree ball you can see your face. On a mat one there is no mirrormirrormirror image.

3. On a sunny, windless day you can see on the surfacesurfacesurface of the lake the mirror image of its surroundings. On the wrinkled surfacesurfacesurface there is no mirrormirrormirror image.

The smooth surfaces reflect off light rays at the same angle while on the rough surfaces the reflected angles are different from incident angles. It is called diffusion of light.mc1b33bada61d5378_1527752263647_0The smooth surfaces reflect off light rays at the same angle while on the rough surfaces the reflected angles are different from incident angles. Task
Construct a diagram with incident and reflected light rays on a smooth surfacesmooth surfacesmooth surface and a rough surfacerough surfacerough surface. Apply the law of light reflexion.

Hint:
You should draw a normalnormalnormal at every point of incidence. If you have some doubts how to do it, look at the picture below.

Lesson summarymc1b33bada61d5378_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

If the incident rays are parallel and they strike a smooth surface they are reflected and all reflected rays remain parallel. This type of reflection is called specular reflection.
Example: reflection on a plain mirror.

If the parallel incident rays are reflected off rough surface then the reflected rays travel with a different orientation. This type of reflection is called a diffuse reflection or diffusion of light.
Example: reflection off a building wall.
