XIII. The elements of descriptive statistics. The student:

a) selects and organises data;

b) reads and interprets the data presented in texts, tables, graphs and diagrams, e.g. the values presented in graphs, the lowest and the highest value, describes trends and the results displayed by specifying the change of the data values, including the following expressions: the values increase, the values decrease, the values are constant.

Introductionmd3179303d1266228_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher explains that statistics is the science which studies frequently repeting phenomena and publishes the results of the study in the form of a lists of figures and in diagrams.

The population censuses were known in ancient Egypt, Persia and Rome. In the Middle Ages all the figures about the royal and church estates were collected. The first statistical publications appeared in Poland in the 19th century. Nowadays the Central Statistical Office is responsible for developing and publishing the numerical data.

Proceduremd3179303d1266228_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher informs the students they are going to learn about the methods of interpreting data presented in the form of tables and diagrams.

Task 1

The tabletabletable shows the data about the areas of continents.

[Table 1]

On the basis of the information presented in the table the students answer the following questions:
a) Which continent has the largest area?
b) Which continent has the smallest area?
c) By how many more thousand kmIndeks górny 2 is Antarctica bigger than Europe?
d) By how many more thousand kmIndeks górny 2 is Africa larger than South America?
e) Which continents have areas larger than the area of Europe?

The even‑numbered groups use their computers to watch the vertical bar diagram presenting the data from the table presenting the areas of continents.md3179303d1266228_1527752263647_0The even‑numbered groups use their computers to watch the vertical bar diagram presenting the data from the table presenting the areas of continents.

Task 2

Students make and interpret the various types of diagrams.

The groups with numbers 1 and 2 draw the square diagramsquare diagramsquare diagram; the groups with numbers 3 and 4 the rectangular diagramrectangular diagramrectangular diagram and the groups 5 and 6 the pie chartpie chartpie chart. They all use the data presented in the following task:

The farmer said that the 50% of his crops was occupied by the cereals, 25% was used for vegetables and on the rest of the field the fruit trees grew. What part of the crops are the fruit trees?

Sample groups diagrams.

The students draw the following conclusion:

Both diagrams presents the same information.

Task 3

The students read and interpret the information presented in the horizontal bar diagrambar diagrambar diagram.

The scouts went for a one‑week bike trip.

The diagramdiagramdiagram shows the following stages of the trip.

The title of the horizontal bar diagram: The length of the route in km.

[Illustration 6]

The students answer the following questions:
a) On which day did the scouts cover the shortest distance?
b) On which days did they make the same number of kilometres?
c) On which day did the scouts cover the longest route?
d) How many kilometres did the scouts make on Sunday?
e) How many more kilometres did they make on Wednesday in comparison to Saturday?

An extra task

Find on the Internet the current exchange rates of 5 currencies. On the basis of the information make the appropriate table.

Prepare activity in which you use the table you prepared.

Lesson summarymd3179303d1266228_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the summarising task.

Then together they sum up the classes by drawing the conclusion to memorise:

- the same data can be presented using the tabletabletable and the diagramdiagramdiagram.
