Percent concentration of the solution - density

Source: domena publiczna.

Link to the lesson

Before you start you should know
  • that the molecular dispersion consists of the solvent and the substance dissolved in it;

  • that the solvent is water in aqueous solutions;

  • how to calculate the percent concentration of a solution based on its mass or mass of solvent and mass of solute;

  • how to estimate the mass of the solution based on the percentage of solution and the mass of solute;

  • how to determine the mass of a solute based on the percent concentration and mass of the solution.

You will learn
  • to calculate the mass of the indicated volume of the solution based on its density;

  • to calculate the content of the solute in a given unit of volume of the solution.

Density of the solution

Task 1

Watch the presentation „Steps of solving a task”. Pay attention to the methods of calculating the percent concentration of the solution with density.

Nagranie audio prezentacji stage of solving the task.

The density of the solution is a physical quantity and means the mass of a given volume unit of the solution. This value changes with temperature. If the solution has a density of 1.05gcm3,, it means that 1 cm Indeks górny 3 of the solution has a mass of 1.05 g.

The density of the solution can be calculated using the formula: dr =mrVr

mr – mass of the solution
Vr– volume of the solution

The density of the solution can be expressed in different units, for example: gcm3, gdm3, kgdm3. In our calculations we will use the following unit gcm3.

Task 2

Calculate the mass of 15 cmIndeks górny 3 of solution with a density of 1.102 gcm3.

Summary

  • The density of the solution can be calculated using the formula: dr = mrVr

  • If the density of the solution is known, it is possible to determine the mass of given volume.

  • The density of the solution can be expressed in different units, for example: gcm3, gdm3, kgdm3.
