Interviewer - In the studio today, there is professor Tom Glide who specialises in unusual weather phenomena. Good morning professor. 

Professor - Good morning.

Interviewer - Professor, last time you were here, you told us about a pneumonia front.  The topic turned out to be so interesting that our listeners asked for more. What have you prepared for us today?

Professor - Thank you. The topic will surely be attractive for the listeners. Today, we will look at the strangest weather events in US history.

Interviewer - So, what’s number one on your list?

Professor - Oh well, it’s hard to choose one. Some people might be surprised by the number of unusual events that have taken place in our country. Many of us don’t even realise such phenomena occur. Let’s start with the fire devil. For it to occur two things must happen at the same time.

Interviewer - What are the things, professor?

Professor - First of all, there must be a fire and an air whirl. Devils are similar to small tornadoes. They are created when a bubble of hot air rises and mixes with the strong wind. That combination leads to the whirling effect. When the air movement appears in the fire, the fire devil is created. The fire gets very intense because of the constant supply of oxygen. The fire devil is a very dangerous phenomenon, but it looks impressive.

Interviewer - Where are they most likely to occur, professor?

Professor - They were registered in California. Let’s move on to the next phenomenon. I wonder if anyone is familiar with the term “Summerless Year”?

Interviewer - I must admit, I’m not. 

Professor - Summerless Year, also known as the poverty year, took place in 1816. That year, the temperatures across the northern hemisphere remained chilly all year round. Snow falls continued in June, when the record snowfall was reported in New England. The same year, in many places of the country, severe droughts were observed in early fall. To make things worse, winter came surprisingly early, in September.

Interviewer - People had no chance to grow any food that year. It must have been a tragic winter.

Professor - It was. It was proven that the poverty year, as the Year Without a Summer is also known, was a natural consequence of the volcanic eruption in Indonesia! The ash blocked the sunlight, which cooled the air.
