The pneumonia front is a weather phenomenonweather phenomenon. It has nothing to do with the actual pneumonia. People don’t have body achesbody aches, high fever, or runny noses. Instead, the phenomenon is connected to chillschills, because the temperature dropstemperature drops suddenly. When the cold air moves through Lake Michigan, it is similar to a quick spread of an infectionspread of an infection in the body.
How does the pneumonia front work? Sometimes winds shiftwinds shift because of the Great Lakes' influence. This leads to a quick temperature drop. A beautiful, hot, sunny day may change intochange into a cold, gloomygloomy one in the blink of an eyein the blink of an eye. It surprises people with sudden coldness when they enjoy their time outside riding bikes or walking dogs.
Even though we know how the pneumonia front works, we don’t know why it happens. Unfortunately, we experience it only once or twice a year. However, what is interesting, some scientists think that climate changeclimate change might affectaffect the frequencyfrequency of this phenomenon. Warmer Great Lakes and reduced winter ice coverice cover could lead to fewer pneumonia fronts.
