Eton is one of the oldest all‑boys public schools in the UK. Don’t let the name mislead you: public schools in the UK are actually private, not state‑run. Numerous prime ministers, world leaders, Nobel laureates and members of the aristocracy graduated from Eton College. No wonder it is often called “the nurse of England’s statesmen”. Eton students wear very characteristic uniforms which have quite a distinct look compared to other schools - dark trousers and black waistcoats over white shirts. You can’t be a true Etonian without the uniform!

At Westminster School in London, all the students work very hard to pass all the exams. Boys and girls who live there are incredibly busy. This doesn’t mean they don’t ever get any entertainment or social life, though. There is a custom of pancake tossing, when on every Fat Thursday, the cook throws up a pancake and students compete to catch it. The students also do lots of sports, in particular rowing. Westminster School Boat Club is a great place to make new friends and row on the river Thames. There are 11 houses in the dorms.

The school called Badminton is located in Bristol. Badminton School believes that every girl should have equal chances in life and the teachers do their best to prepare the students for future university studies and careers anywhere in the world. The school has a strong international outlook and many girls from overseas come to study there. An interesting tradition celebrated at Badminton is called “Pump Handles”. At the end of all three terms, each girl shakes the hand of a teacher. Looking each other in the eye before going on holidays is a way of showing respect and care.

Phillips Academy is a co‑educational school located near Boston, U.S.A., in a beautiful, rural area. It is surrounded by scenic forests and beautiful rivers. The school is famous for having educated some of the past presidents of the U.S.A.! The usual day begins at 8:30 a.m. and lessons end at 2:50 p.m. Wednesdays are the exception: classes end early at 1 p.m. so that the students can spend more time on doing athletics, working in clubs, or doing community service.

Camden is a military boarding school, and this shapes the way young people live and study there. It is an all‑male school, although there are other academies for female students nearby. The biggest difference between this school and others is that there are no students at Camden. They are called cadets! This is because Camden prepares both for university studies and military service. Cadets begin their day very early, waking up at 6:30 a.m., and lights are out at 10 p.m. The time in between is filled with classes, athletics, using the swimming pool, and socialising. Sometimes, they take part in real military parades.
