Anne: Hi, James!
James: So, Anne, what will we look like in the future?
Anne: This is a difficult question (laughs). In truth, we don’t know what humans will look like in the future. A lot of people think that we will be cyborgs. We will have implants and mechanical parts. After all, technology is an important part of our life. James: You don’t agree with that prediction?
Anne: Not exactly. Maybe we will be cyborgs. Nobody knows. But I’m a geneticist. I look at biological changes --- things that happen naturally. I don’t have hard facts, but I’ve got a few ideas. James: Please, do share!
Anne: As you know, people look different because of their environment. Some have wide noses and big lips, others don’t. Some of us are tall and lean, others are short and stocky. We’ve got different hair and skin colours. This is changing. I believe that in the future, we will have an “average" human.
James: “Average human"? What do you mean?
Anne: Let me explain. Today, people travel. We aren’t isolated anymore. In other words, our environment isn’t so important. This means that a future human will look like an average of all of us. Our bodies will change so that we will look more alike. We will have similar noses, mouths, and eyes. We will be of similar height and weight. Our skin and hair will look similar, too!
James: Wow, I had no idea this was a possibility. Anne: It is!
James: Are there any other possibilities? Anne: Well, some people say that we will live in space. As spacers, our bodies will change. If we live on a spaceship, our legs and arms will get longer and thinner. Our bones and muscles will get very weak. But it’s not about genetics. It’s simply an effect of low gravity on the human body.
James: I see. Well, thank you, Anne! I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Anne: The changes take tens or even hundreds of thousands of years. We won’t see them, but it’s cool to think about it!
