Broadway & West End - Who’s on top?
Broadway and West End are the most popular capitals of musicals, both offer professional and high standard performances.
The first chart shows that American Broadway is in a better position when it comes to capacity and size.
Although the West End has a smaller capacity, it has been in the lead when it comes to attendance almost every year since 1986, according to the data shown in the second chart.

Musicals made on Broadway and in West End immerse you in the story right away. Once you see a show there, you will wish to come back for more. Let’s consider some numbers related to size, attendance, and productions of both of them.
Looking back
The Mousetrap is the longest‑running West End show and the longest running production in the world. It has been played in London since 25th November 1952. Agatha Christie’s detective novel has been performed in London over 28,000 times!
Hamilton, which tells the story of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, received a record‑breaking 16 nominations and won 11 awards, including Best Musical. It received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The first theatre in London was the Theatre Royal, which opened in 1663. It quickly became a common pastime for the rich British, and more and more theatres were built to entertain people.
Some facts in numbers.
Did you know that Broadway Theatres don’t have to be physically located on Broadway Street? Broadway theatres are divided into Broadway, Off‑Broadway, and Off‑Off‑Broadway categories. Broadway theatres must have 500 seats and be located on Times Square. Theatres located in Manhattan with 99‑499 seats are Off‑Broadway, and if they have under 99 seats they are off‑off‑Broadway.

Disney's Lion King, with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, is Broadway's biggest money‑maker in history. It has run on Broadway for over 20 years, the show has made a profit of $1.4 billion, with an average of $2 million a week.
Choose a Musical for You
Going to the theatre is undoubtedly a wonderful experience provided that you pick the show that best matches your needs. There are many types of musicals: comedies, classical, historical, biographical, film and a lot more. Each one has a different story to tell. Some might lift our spirits, such as Mamma Mia, while some others make us thoughtful or even sad, like Hair.

The right musical should be chosen carefully on account of the type of genre and music played in it. A person who is a fan of rock music might get bored with classical music. That is why, in order to make most out of the show, we should choose the performance with the music we really like and the plot that we are ready for. Sometimes the shows are amazingly dynamic, which works like a real booster but sometimes they are real tear‑jerkers, which persistently stay in your thoughts. A good show will influence our mood for longer than the duration of it. Consider it before you pick a show.
Make sure you know the way
No matter if you’re a regular theatregoer or you’re planning your first visit, you should always be careful and check the date, time and venue of the performance twice. Especially when you don’t know the area well. Check the bus timetables and how long it takes to get to the venue. Always take earlier buses to make sure you won’t be late for the show.

Pośrodku widoczny jest chodnik, którym w różnych kierunkach spacerują ludzie. Po ulicy jadą samochody i żółte taksówki. Na elewacji jednego z budynków po lewej stronie widoczny jest duży napis: TIMES SQUARE.
When in London, remember that there are at least 241 theatres across the city while in New York there are 41 professional ones. It’s easy to get lost and confuse places. The theatres are located in different parts of the city, which makes it terribly hard to reach the right one on foot.
Book the Tickets First
If you want to be absolutely certain that you will be allowed to enter the music theatre, you should take care of the tickets first. It is advisable to book the tickets and buy them well in advance. But you have to remember that the theatres do not offer vouchers or refund the money in case of resignation. Buy smart in advance but be sure you can go.

If you are looking for last‑minute theatre tickets, we recommend looking online. You can easily book theatre show tickets that are cheaper online than at the box office. If you buy your tickets online, you also get great deals and offers that aren’t otherwise available at the box office. All forms of debit and credit cards are accepted.
Watch the Time
Most music theatres usually offer evening shows during the weekdays. The show usually starts between 7 and 8 p.m. so that everybody can make it after work. At the weekend, the number of shows increases, and so morning, afternoon and evening performances can be found in the repertoire. Some of them are dedicated to families with children.

If you have made the decision on the entrance time, don’t forget to estimate how much time it takes you to get to the music theatre and get home after the show. Make sure you won’t be late as you might not be allowed to enter the show. Some music theatres allow the late‑comers to take their seats during the interval, but it’s not a rule. The average run time of a theatre show ranges from 1.5 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes and some of them do not have any interval planned.
Choose the Best Seats
When planning to watch a show, you’d better do research which places you can see best from. Before buying the tickets, view the seating plan in this particular music theatre on the website. Check where and how big the stage is. The seats are divided into sections and generally, the closer you choose to sit, the more expensive the tickets are.

The best places are found in the stalls section since the seats are closest to the stage and the audience can get a clear view of the stage, with no obstructions. The Dress Circle section is a bit elevated, which offers a better experience with an unrestricted, panoramic view of the stage as well. For those who live on a tight budget, the Grand Circle section is a perfect one. Seats are located quite a distance from the stage but the tickets are cheap. Lastly, those viewers who are looking for the cheapest tickets and are willing to compromise on the view should book a Balcony ticket.
Watch the Dress Code
There is no official dress code to attend a show. Many theatregoers wear jeans and T‑shirts. However, you might want to dress up in smart casuals or formals to avoid standing out in a crowd. You always leave your jacket in the cloak room as it’s not welcome to sit in it during the show.

Powoli rozpina, wygładza i sprawdza spasowanie poszczególnych części swojej garderoby.
In some music theatres, though, people wear more elegant clothes and avoid T‑shirts or hoodies. They have the sense of taking part in the higher rank culture, which they want to respect. The safest solution is to wear semi‑formal clothes that will let you feel comfortable and look neat and smart at the same time.
Age Restriction
Generally, children above the age of 5 are expected to pay full price for a London theatre ticket while children under the age of 5 cannot enter any show. Children under 16 are not allowed to attend West End theatres without adult supervision. However, most music theatre shows have individual recommended age limits depending on the subject matter.

Music theatres have a wide range of shows on offer for youngsters, teens, and adults. They encourage all family members to participate in musical events and recommend, e.g. Kids Sundays, which let you purchase theatre tickets for children under 16 at half price as long as they are accompanied by two adults. In Poland, for example, in some music theatres, little children aged 4–5 do not have a ticket at all.
A Handful of Information
The rules to follow are no longer different than in any public place. It means eating and drinking are not welcome. Neither are taking pictures and recording the show. Using mobile phones is obviously forbidden. While being in the music theatre, we should only be focused on the show.

I am strongly for keeping the dress code in places such as music theatres. I can’t imagine people entering these places wearing colourful hoodies, or mini skirts. This is a cultural place and we should know what good manners are.
