Wikipedia Monument

Poland can boast to be the only country in the world which has a Wikipedia Monument. It is located in Słubice at Frankfurt Square and was unveiled in 2014. The idea behind its creation was to honour thousands of anonymous contributors who selflessly create Wikipedia, regardless of their religious, political, economic, or cultural differences.

Famous readers of Britannica

Some people set themselves an ambitious goal of reading an entire print set of Britannica, all the parts covering various realms of knowledge, and they actually achieve it. There are some famous names among them, for example George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, but also Al Capone, a notorious American gangster, who is said to have read a 24‑volume 14th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica in his cell.

Britannica’s history

Although hardback encyclopaedias are not as popular today as they used to be, Britannica still remains the most trustworthy and prestigious symbol of status. Altogether, Britannica has issued 15 editions and its history can be divided into five eras, taking into consideration changes in management and re‑organisation of the content. At one point, the rights to Britannica were sold to an American partnership, which caused a lot of resentment among some British citizens.

Wikipedia logo

The Wikipedia logo is a circle which is a visual metaphor for our planet. Initially, it had small letters forming words inside, but this image was later changed to a “puzzle ball” with glyphs from many different writing systems. The current version is an unfinished globe made of jigsaw pieces some of which are missing.
