THE HOUSE WE COULDN’T FLIPInterviewer: Is it true that you actually started your career as house‑flippershouse‑flippers twice?
Samantha: Yes it is! (laughter) When we first started flipping we were convinced that the only way to make our dreams come true was to accumulate cashaccumulate cash, buy a house, renovaterenovate it and then flipflip. We had a dream but very little practical know‑howknow‑how. So either way, we had been saving every pennysaving every penny, and living in a very small flat when we saw the first propertyproperty we decided to flip.
Christian: It was a real hit, it seemed. A slightly run‑downrun‑down, quiet house with a great curb appealcurb appeal that needed a new coat of paintcoat of paint on the outside and a complete rework on the inside. We knew right away that it had the potential to be a charmercharmer.
Interviewer: So what went wrong? Because I guess there was a catchcatch.
Christian: What didn’t? (laughter) We were green back then so it was hard to predict the real costs - both time- and money--wise-wise. The outer walls turned out to be rottingrotting in some places and there was risk of insect infestationinfestation so we had to replace part of the boardingboarding and impregnate it all. The inside wasn’t much more forgiving, was it, Sam?
Samantha: No, it wasn’t. The rooms were arranged in such a way that most of the space got wasted and the house felt really crampedcramped. We knew it wouldn’t sell if it wasn’t airyairy and spaciousspacious so we decided to knock down some walls. The problem was…
Christian: … the building materials.
Samantha: Right. The place hadn’t been built from the same materials that were listedlisted in its specification. The main wall cracked and we had to reinforcereinforce it, which drove up the costsdrove up the costs even more.
Interviewer: Sounds horrible, but still doesn’t have to mean you must end your career, does it?
Samantha: No it was not that. The thing is that once we were done moving the wall and fixing both the interiorinterior and exteriorexterior, we …
Christian: … just couldn’t let it golet it go. The house really was a charmer and the work, the planning and designing just created this connection.
Samantha: We couldn’t flip it. Instead we moved in with Lilly, our cat, sold the old place and went on saving some more money. We decided to wait with our house‑flipping dream because our dream of a perfect home took us by surprisetook us by surprise.
