The picture below shows breakfast. It looks different from breakfasts shown on TV where milk with cereal or sandwiches are usually presented as a perfect way to start your day. How is the meal in the picture different from what you eat in the morning? Do you think it’s healthier than milk with cereal? Why/Why not? You’re going to read a text about what a healthy diet should really be like.

My New Life
Anna Caruk My New Life

In high school, my life used to be a nightmare. I had a sweet toothhad a sweet tooth [have a sweet tooth]had a sweet tooth and, as a result, I  exceededexceeded [exceed]exceeded 90 kilos one day, being a boy who was only 155 centimetres tall. I was tired, slow, moody, and I felt the happiest when I could eat something, usually something sweet. Then I realised I had a problem. I hated physical exercise, I always preferred computer games and TV to football or PE classes. That’s why I finally asked my parents to help me find a solution to face my obesityobesityobesity.

They took me to a dieticiandieticiandietician, and step by step, my life started changing. First, after a long conversation, the lady prepared a balanced dietbalanced dietbalanced diet which was not only healthy, but also matched my preferences. Later, she explained to me how important two basic things, such as caloriescalories [calorie]calories and nutrientsnutrients [nutrient]nutrients, are. I learnt that I need to pay more attention to how many calories the food I consume every day should contain, and I have to make sure my meals include healthy components, such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and so on. That was supposed to help me lose a few kilos, but most of all, make me feel better, more energetic and, obviouslyobviouslyobviously, happier.

So I started controlling my calorie intakecalorie intakecalorie intake day by day, I learnt the food pyramidfood pyramidfood pyramid by heart, and read even more than I was expected to about food groupsfood groups [food group]food groups. After a month I even knew what to choose for my breakfast or dinner to compose a balanced platebalanced platebalanced plate. What surprised me the most was the fact that it’s not about eating only leafy greensleafy greensleafy greens all the time. The thing is that you should, for example, limit the consumption of starchy vegetablesstarchy vegetables [starchy vegetable]starchy vegetables, but it doesn’t mean you can’t eat them at all. I’ve also discovered a lot of new tasty things like grainsgrains [grain]grains (especially whole grains, whole grainswhole grains, which were new to me), beansbeans [bean]beans (and all the legumeslegumes [legume]legumes in general) as well as some dairydairydairy products such as kefir, light cottage cheese, etc. You also need to drink a lot of water, make sure you provide your body with a proper amount of fibrefibrefibre and proteinsproteins [protein]proteins, and you quickly realise that you can live without greasygreasygreasy or sweet food with no problem at all.

That summer I lost 10 kilos and another 35 kilos the following year. Since then, I’ve been still continuing the good habits and I also started doing some sports and realised that life could be different, better. Today, I’m a personal fitness coach and I work at the gym, motivating other people to change their lives just like I did years ago, and educating people on how the right nutritionnutritionnutrition can change your body and your mind as well.
