A Company of One's Own
Agnieszka Sękiewicz‑Magoń A Company of One's Own

Setting up your own company is an important step, which needs to be thoroughly considered. First of all, you should decide on your particular kind of product or service — is there a nichenicheniche in the market where your business would fit perfectly? To answer this question, you need to conduct market researchmarket researchmarket research, which will also help you to determine your target customertarget customertarget customer, the demanddemanddemand for your product or service and a marketing strategymarketing strategymarketing strategy, necessary to implementimplementimplement the most effective marketing methods. It would be perfect if you found a unique feature of your brandbrandbrand, because it may give you a competitive advantagecompetitive advantagecompetitive advantage over your rivals.

The next step would be to prepare and write a business planbusiness planbusiness plan. A good business plan will not only guide you through each stage of starting and, then, managing your firm, but will also get you necessary fundsfunds [fund]funds and investorsinvestors [investor]investors, convincing them that they will see a return on their investment.

Before you decide to registerregisterregister your business and raise the money you need to open your firm, you have to choose a business structurebusiness structurebusiness structure: are you going to choose sole ownershipsole ownershipsole ownership, that is being the only owner, work in a partnershippartnershippartnership with somebody or will you create a limited liability companylimited liability companylimited liability company? It is important to choose carefully, because your business structure will affect things like how much you will pay in taxes or the paperwork you will need to file.

Collecting the financial means necessary to open a business seems to be the most difficult part of the process. Most people take out a bank loanbank loanbank loan or borrow some money from their family. In recent years, crowdfundingcrowdfundingcrowdfunding has become an increasingly popular method of raising funds for a ventureventureventure. Basically, you create an online campaign specifying your goal and anyone can contribute, even a relatively small amount.

However, you should not forget that sometimes all the best plans, strategies and partners may fail you, so it is wise to have a ready exit strategyexit strategyexit strategy prepared in case of any unforeseen problems. You simply need to know how to end your business without generating big losses.

Many young people dream of opening their own business in the future and, if you are one of them, be prepared to take the steps you need to make it happen, but also be aware of the challenges it brings.
