She’s very nice, but I dislike her because my friend likes her so much! Tom and I used to do everything together. We sat at one desk, ate lunch together, and even walked home together. NowadaysnowadaysNowadays, Tom is always talking with the new student. Sometimes, he sits with her, too. The worst thing happened last Friday when I invited him to the cinema and he said that he’s meeting with the new student! I got very upsetupsetupset and I stopped talking to Tom. My mom told me to try and reach outreach outreach out, but against her adviceagainst her advice [against the advice of]against her advice, I stopped answering his calls. But I still like Tom and I don’t want to loselose lose him. Please, I need a word of advicea word of adviceword of advice!
Emily
Dear Emily,
Keeping relationships with friends can be very hard. I think that you’re a little bit jealousjealousjealous of the new student, but you shouldn’t be. People can have more than one friend. Perhaps, you can all be friends! If I were youif I were you…If I were you, I’d call your friend and tell him how you feel. It seems that he doesn’t understand why you’re upset and he may want you to reach out, too. You can explain how you feel and ask him if the three of you can spend some time together. Take my advicetake my adviceTake my advice and I’m sure it will all work outit will all work outit will all work out!

And that’s only what I do during the weekdays! At weekends, I clean the entire kitchen and two bathrooms. I also do the washing and hang it in the garden. The problem is that I’ve also got a lot of homework. Sometimes, I have no time for myself. I get back home, do my homework, clean, and then it’s time for bed. At weekends, I can’t go out and meet my friends until I clean the house. My parents say that it’s normal and I shouldn’t complaincomplain complain. I disagreedisagree disagree. I want to help at home, but I’m also very tired. I think it’s unfairunfairunfair that I have to do so much and I have so little time to restrestrest. GRAMATYKA:
Giving advice - udzielanie porad
Do udzielania porad w języku angielskim najczęściej używamy czasowników modalnych, takich jakshould, may, might. Najbardziej popularnym z nich jestshould ( „powinieneś”/”powinnaś”). Porady zshouldbudujemy według wzoru: osoba + should + czasownik + dopełnienie.
Przykłady:
You should talk to your mom. - Powinieneś/Powinnaś porozmawiać ze swoją mamą.
Should I retake the exam? - Czy powinienem/powinnam poprawić ten sprawdzian?
You shouldn’t argue with your friends. - Nie powinieneś/powinnaś kłócić się z przyjaciółmi.
Porad można również udzielać przy użyciu wyrażeniahad better („lepiej żeby”). W tym przypadku najczęściej używamy formy skróconej.
Przykład:
You’d better (You had better) talk to her. - Lepiej żebyś z nią porozmawiał/porozmawiała.
Inną opcją jest używanie wyrażeniaWhy don’t you...(„Dlaczego nie...”).
Przykład:
Why don’t you help your dad? - Dlaczego nie pomożesz swojemu tacie?
Dając rady, możemy też stosować wyrażenieIf I were you... („Gdybym był/była na twoim miejscu...”). If I were youłączy się z czasownikiem modalnymwould(„zrobiłbym”/„zrobiłabym ). W tym kontekściewouldwyraża nasze zamiary.
Przykłady:
If I were you, I would ask him. - Gdybym był/była na twoim miejscu, to bym go spytał/spytała.
I suggest that you take the exam. - Sugeruję, żebyś podszedł/podeszła do egzaminu.
Wszystkie wyrażenia z powyższych można łączyć z wyrażeniemtake advice („posłuchać rady”).
Przykłady:
You should take my advice. - Powinieneś/Powinnaś posłuchać mojej rady.
You would better take my advice. - Lepiej żebyś posłuchał/posłuchała mojej rady.
Why don’t you take my advice? - Dlaczego nie posłuchasz mojej rady?
If I were you, I would take my advice. - Gdybym był/była na twoim miejscu, to posłuchałbym/posłuchałabym mojej rady.
I suggest that you take my advice. - Sugeruję, żebyś posłuchał/posłuchała mojej rady.
Uwaga! Pamiętaj, że inaczej zapisujemy rzeczownik „rada”, a inaczej czasownik „radzić”. Wyraz „rada” zapisujemy jakoadvice, natomiast „radzić” zapisujemy jakoadvise.
Przykłady:
Take my advice. - Posłuchaj mojej rady.
I advise you to… - Radzę ci…
