Why Do We Need World Water Day?World Water Day was first celebrated in 1993. We celebratecelebrate World Water Day to raise awarenessraise awareness about the global water crisis. The crisis means that many people in the world do not have accessaccess to safe water. Every year, this day has a different themetheme. In 2020, the theme was climate changeclimate change. In 2022, it was all about groundwatergroundwater.
Why groundwater? It’s very important for ecosystemsecosystems. This water is undergroundunderground and in some parts of the world, it may be the only water people have. Did you know that almost all the fresh waterfresh water in the world is groundwater? We can’t live without it! A big problem with groundwater is pollutionpollution. It happens when different products or substances pollutepollute groundwater and make it unsafe for people to use.
Is there anything we can do to save water? Of course! If you want to be more eco‑friendlyeco‑friendly, start saving water in your house. Check all the pipespipes in the bathrooms and kitchen to fix leaksfix leaks. Take quick showers instead of baths. You can save a lot of water thanks to that! Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Run the washing machine or a dishwasher only when you have a full loadfull load. Remember to use the eco mode! And finally, your plants will thank you if you water them only if needed. So will the planet!
