We should start with the form of water, which is actually called „state”. There are three states of water: solid which is ice, liquid which is water and gas which is steam.

There are also different types of water. Among natural sources of water, there are oceans, seas, rivers and ponds. Did you know that ocean water is different from river water? Let's find out what the main differences are!

The main sources of salt water are oceans and seas. More than 70% percent of the Earth’s water is found in the oceans.

This type of water is called salt water, because it contains high salts and minerals. It is too salty for human use.

The density of salt water is quite high. Thanks to that, your body will float more easily in the sea than in the swimming pool! For example, there’s a place in the world called the Dead Sea, where you cannot drown! The Dead Sea lies between Israel and Jordan, and, interestingly, it is not a sea but a lake. It is called “dead” because it is too salty for organisms to live.

Now that you know the characteristics of salt water, let’s find out more about fresh water.

The main source of fresh water is lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The largest amount of fresh water is found in Antarctica - nearly 61% of all fresh water, according to scientists.

Fresh water contains salts and minerals, just as salt water does, but in less than 1%. This is because the water that flows through the rocks, sand, and soil washes the salt away.

While the freezing point of sea water varies because of the density, fresh water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.

Speaking of freezing! Did you know that water expands when it freezes? It means that if you want to make some ice, you should leave a little bit more space in the freezer.

One more thing about the ice - you may think that if it’s a solid state, it will be heavy. Actually it’s not true - ice will float when you put it on water, because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water, so it’s lighter!

We’ve described states of water, salt water, fresh water, frozen water… Now it’s time to talk about the rain or, to be more specific, about raindrops.

When they fall from the sky, raindrops are not in the shape of tears – they may look like this, but only after they stop on something.

Before that, when they fall from the clouds, they’re in the shape of… hamburgers! The small droplets are round at first, but as they fall, they start to look more like a hamburger bun and become rounder at the top and flatter at the bottom. The reason for this is the speed of falling.

Let’s move on to the human body! Did you know that 70% of the human brain consists of water? For the whole body, it would be around 60%, depending on our age, sex and hydration level.

So why is it so important for us to stay hydrated and drink water? It’s good for our health and we need it to survive. Did you know that water doesn’t stay for a long time in your stomach? It’s gone five minutes after drinking it!

If you look around or even if you look at yourself, you will see that water surrounds us. However, we shouldn’t take it for granted because of the global water crisis. Remember about that and take actions to save as much water as you can!
