Hunting models in Europe

The hypertext material is an article from a newspaper. It’s a short comparison of the hunting management in Poland and other European countries. The material introduces two hunting models: the territory hunting model and the license hunting model.

According to the hunting lawmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279637332_0hunting law of 1995, gamemcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279718401_0game management is based on long‑term hunting plans and is the responsibility of the state. This law indicates the necessity of the protection and breeding of animals for general purposes. The protection and management of game populationsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279733582_0populations, as well as the improvement of their dwellingmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279738479_0dwelling conditions, is a purpose of huntingmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279743621_0hunting. Hunting activities also serve to preserve biodiversitymcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279748379_0biodiversity and protect nature.

Hunting in Europe is based on two organizational systems: territorialmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279753543_0territorialand license hunting. The former consists of the leasing of circuits in which hunting is conducted, including harvesting. In some countries, such as Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia, game is considered state property. Thanks to leasemcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279762480_0lease, you can hunt animals in the region. The lessee is interested in such harvest as to maintain the appropriate size of the game. The attitude to the leased hunting ground, just as to private property, manifests itself in the protection of game and the development of the hunting groundmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279767416_0hunting ground.

The licensemcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279772536_0licensemodel doesn’t limit the number of hunters: here permits are for huntingmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302736917_0hunting. The size of the harvest and the length of the season is determined on the basis of wild game population estimates. Such a system requires the maintenance of an Animal Protection Servicesmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279782995_0Animal Protection Services. It’s used in Greece and partly in Italy.

Combined hunting systems are used in Switzerland and Portugal.

The changes that are currently underway in both systems are aimed at developing ones that would combine the positive qualities of both systems, adapted to the ecological, economic and social conditions of individual countries.

Polish hunters also work for the restorationmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279787842_0restoration of the endangered species. We can proudly say that the Polish model of hunting is considered a model worth emulating.

Determining the method of game inventory

The hypertext material is a dialogue between a forester and a huntsman from a hunting club. The forester proposes to additionally verify the data on the number of animals in the hunting circuit, resulting from an all‑year‑round observation, with the so‑called counting tracks method.

Forester: May the forest reward you, huntsmanmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292341857_0huntsman!

Huntsman: May the forest reward you!

Forester: It’s time to summarize the results of the all‑year‑round game observationmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292338305_0observation. We will determine the number of individual species living in the forest. Based on the results obtained, the forest district manager will determine the status of the game and the number of animals to be culledmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292330786_0culled for each species.

Huntsman: This year is exceptional because we have noticed mouflonsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292326285_0mouflons. They have been around for more than six months.

Forester: That’s right. It looks like they have settled in for good. Apparently the biotopemcd5d3ac915e89685_1531917295940_0biotope suits them. I propose reporting their presence in the hunting grounds without determining a number for culling. If the flockmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292312053_0flock continues to grow, then who knows, maybe in the near future we will hunt for this species too.

Huntsman: I’m glad that we have similar plans. My hunter friends have observed from 13 to 17 animals.

Forester: If possible, I suggest counting the tracksmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292307534_0tracks of the mouflons to gain more accurate data about their numbers. Perhaps we keep counting the same animals.

Huntsman: I will gladly help. I suggest carrying out two countingsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292302003_0countings at the turn of January and February.

Forester: And what about other species?

Huntsman: Regarding deer, roe deermcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292294450_0roe deerand boars, our observations don’t differ from last year and give similar results. The culling plans can remain at a similar level.

Forester: I agree with you as far as the roe deer and the boarmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292283746_0boar is concerned. But not with the deermcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292278430_0deer. Their numbers are higher than in previous years. The culling plan should be 20% higher. It’s the deer that are responsible for the increase in the damage to the sapling standsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292272551_0sapling stands. The forest district manager will be decisive in this matter.

Huntsman: I understand. In that case, I agree.

Forester: Our recommendations are settled then. Thank you for your cooperation.

Huntsman: Thank you.

Rules of conducting hunting management

The hypertext material is a short lecture. A forester explains the rules of hunting management in Poland. The forester describes who has the right to hunt, the rules of forming clubs and the rules of main wild game species management.

Hipertekst jest krótkim wykładem. Leśniczy tłumaczy zasady gospodarki łowieckiej w Polsce. Opisuje kto ma prawo wykonywania polowania, zasady zrzeszania się, okresy ochronne i sposoby gospodarowania głównymi gatunkami łownymi.

mcd5d3ac915e89685_1531126536542_0

Welcome.

Today, I will introduce you to the rules of hunting management. Animal populationmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279733582_0population management requires extensive knowledge of the biology of particular species, forest management, meteorology, botanymcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302754287_0botany and history. This is a very interdisciplinary field.

The knowledge of many relationships and interactions occurring in the natural environmentmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302748645_0environment enables people to draw on the richness of the fauna, ensuring the continuity of particular species.

Huntingmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302736917_0Hunting ** mainly involves the hunting management of animal dwelling terrains.

Hunters cultivate the hunting fields to diversify the feeding groundsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302733680_0feeding grounds. They designate areas of so‑called animal refuge, where, under optimum conditions, individual species can breedmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302728712_0breed.

Hunters also preserve hunting traditions that are part of the history and culture of our country.

Being a good hunter isn’t an easy task. You must first pass many exams, complete internships, familiarize yourself with the hunting groundmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497279767416_0hunting ground. What’s more, you have to be patient during hunting.

Huntersmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302609415_0Hunters are members of the Polish Hunting Association. Each of the Regional PHA Boards associates hunting clubsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302614191_0hunting clubs which regular hunters belong to. There exists a separate group, with equal rights, comprised of hunters who aren’t members of hunting clubs.

Hunters ** hunt in accordance with the applicable hunting periods and multi‑annual breeding plans that each area has. The cullingsmcd5d3ac915e89685_1497292330786_0cullings are performed within the framework of the annual hunting plans, which determine the number of individual species to be hunted.

As you can see, even in a nutshell, we have no way to discuss all of the issues. That’s why I would like to invite you to another meeting where I will try to introduce the biologymcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302598187_0biology of the main game species, i.e. deer, roe deer, boar, fallow deermcd5d3ac915e89685_1497302589553_0fallow deer.

Thank you for your attention.
