Tsunamis affect a large part of the world which happens to be a popular holiday destination. I don’t think knowing that tsunamis are possible there would stop me from visiting them. I trust that if these places host millions of tourists, they have some alert systems to warn people in time to take shelter.
If I was spending a holiday in a place likely to be affected by tsunamis, I would definitely check all the information about it. I mean, I would install a tsunami alert on my phone, make sure I knew where to run and take shelter if it came to the worst. I would also book a room on higher floors of the hotel. And I would hope for the best!

Are we helpless in the face of tsunami waves?

Tsunami waves have staggering potency and can wipe out entire coastal cities of the surface of the Earth. Nowadays people know quite a lot about the mechanism of their creation, however, it does not always help them to avoid the cataclysm.

Unlike wind‑generated waves, the energy which causes tsunami waves comes from violent events such as volcano eruptions, landslides, earthquakes, and many more. The energy which is released as a result of such events pushes huge masses of water to the ocean surface and above it. As it falls, it splits into waves and a tsunami comes into existence. Although barely noticeable in high seas, tsunami waves are deadly when they reach the coast.

People try to tame this power or at least lessen the impact of the waves on their settlements. They monitor and try to detect all phenomena which can initiate tsunamis. They also build constructions such as seawalls, sea gates, and channels to stop or divert water surge. It’s not always effective, as in the case of Fukushima, where despite seawalls, a tsunami damaged the nuclear power plant.

Nature has its own ways, and although we are not completely helpless in the face of its forces, it’s not easy to control it.
