Exercise 2

Hunger is a problem that still exists in our modern world. Increasingly, it is caused by natural disasters resulting from climate change, but also by war. Sometimes food insecurity and starvation are used as a tactic of war: the army intentionally destroys farms and fields, or kills animals, causing food shortages and leaving people with hardly any resources, doomed to die of hunger. When enemy armies surround an area, people are trapped inside a village, city or neighbourhood and, as a result, suffer from food deprivation and lack of medications or other vital resources. Many conflict zones desperately need humanitarian and financial aid. Various international charities organise food donations, and once the conflict is over, they help to introduce sustainable agriculture so that rationing and undernourishment can give way to sufficient food supplies and food security.
