I think it’s impossible to point out any universal aspects which foreign students would find difficult to grow accustomed to. It depends on what culture they come from and how different it is from ours. For some, it might be our food, for others, our perception of time.

We call such a situation a culture bump. It happens when the lack of knowledge regarding the accepted behaviour in simple social situations results in awkward moments. It can be avoided by checking what behaviour is expected in the culture we are going to encounter. If we don’t know where someone comes from and we experience a culture bump, we should apologize. Remember, the most important thing is to be respectful no matter the situation!

The picture shows two people trying to greet each other. However, they don’t seem to be doing it very successfully. One man is bowing while the other one has extended his hand expecting a handshake, which he didn’t get. It’s a typical example of a culture bump, when the lack of knowledge regarding the accepted behaviour in simple social situations results in awkward moments. It could have been avoided by checking what behaviour is expected in the culture we are going to encounter.

wyjaśnisz, na czym polega proces akulturacji i czym są szok kulturowy i nieporozumienie kulturowe;
Imagine moving to another country. You speak the language, you are friendly, so you quickly make friends. One day a friend invites you to their home for a family dinner. On the day you come on time, bring a small gift for the parents, you are polite, so… why is everyone looking at you strangely? No clue, but it gets quite uncomfortable really fast!
Well, possibly you forgot to take off your shoes, or you are using the wrong form of address, or… Possibilities are endless. What you are experiencing is a culture bump, a misunderstanding resulting from a lack of knowledge. If there are many such bumps, a person may experience culture shock, be taken aback when faced with unfamiliar customs.
Bumps and shocks may be part of the process of acculturation. People who move to another country have to grow accustomed to the differences, and their emotions and attitude may change. After initial enthusiasm, they might seem withdrawn or irritable. They will be going through some ups and downs before they finally settle.
So, imagine you are the host at that dinner and you bring your new foreign friend to your home. What information do you need to share about the behaviour expected? How do you make your new friend feel welcome? Anything you do will help, so patiently answer any questions about acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. Lack of cultural knowledge may result in feelings of isolation. You have the means to help - use them!
