I believe different billionaires have different reasons for investing their fortunes in space exploration. Most of those people are entrepreneurs, so I’m sure they see in space exploration yet another chance of making more money. What’s more, apart from state space agencies such as NASA, there are many private companies which participate actively in space exploration. Such a situation has both positive and negative sides.

The main advantage of competition in the space race is the accelerated pace of technological and scientific progress. As every nation wants to prove their supremacy, so countries invest heavily in research and development. That leads to breakthroughs in spacecraft technology and satellite systems. The involvement of private companies adds the spirit of practicality, cost effectiveness and innovation. As business is driven by profit, entrepreneurs seek to make their products, for example space trips, more accessible to common people.

However, competition in the space race has its dark side, too. Countries and companies may end up duplicating their efforts and wasting time, money and resources on doing the same things. What’s even worse, the desire to outpace rivals may result in lowering safety standards, inadequate testing and oversight, which in turn, may lead to accidents.
