TRANSCRIPTazurewhite
Today, I’d like to talk about a very interesting story by Stephen Aastrol, the CEO of the Tower Paddle Board company. Entitled “The Five Hour Workday,” this book describes introducing just such a scheme. Operating under the assumption that the possibility to go home early would motivate anyone to work harder, Aastrol allowed his employees to leave at 1 p.m. His hope that more time for themselves would make his people happier and more ready to work, however, proved to be unfounded. Not over the first few months, mind you. The future looked bright at first. But then, as he describes it, it started to become more and more obvious that, instead of being rested and more focused, people were getting more distracted. As if five hours was simply not long enough for them to feel like it was serious work. Productivity went down and limiting the experiment to just summer months didn’t help. Some people were fired, others left by themselves. Many complained that, paradoxically, so little time at the office meant less social life at the office and no so‑called corpo‑culture, which they had come to expect and like. Interestingly, this is one of the most common complaints among remote working people in general. Definitely something to think about for our employers. Anyway, back to our main topic. I strongly recommend this reading to both employers and employees who are considering hybrid or remote work. Learn from other people’s mistakes, I always say! Which is not to say that this is what this experiment was. Just a figure of speech, of course. On the contrary. We need people like Aastor to figure out how to proceed, but a lot of Aastor’s experiences could be treated as a lesson, and I guess that’s what he had in mind when he wrote it.

No, I wouldn’t. If I don’t have to go to the office, I prefer working from home. I need some space for papers or maybe a cup of tea or coffee. I think working from home provides me with better working conditions. It’s more comfortable, and I can feel relaxed but still stay more focused on my job. Co‑working spaces can be noisy, and I like having my own space to work.working conditions, comfort, relaxed, co‑working space.

meet deadlines, many projects, overworked, called for, backache
There was a year when all my tests and school projects were due more or less at the same time. Because my grades depended on them I wanted to learn everything and meet all the deadlines. It called for a lot of sleepless nights and at the end of all this, I was really tired. I had a backache from sitting in the chair all the time and I was so overworked I didn't feel like doing anything. But I succeeded and passed everything!

In the picture, I can see a huge space and two women working on/at their computers. In the background, there are a few sofas, lamps, chairs, and something that divides the space into smaller spaces, so I believe that this is a co‑working space. In the foreground, a young woman is sitting at a small table working on/at her computer and behind her, another woman is also working, sitting on a sofa. They both look focused, that’s why I think they are working.

comfort, disconnect, overworked, oversleep, tired, backache, safety regulations, flexitime, hybrid working, remote work, commuting, corpo culture, on the one hand, on the contrary, what is more
Freelancers have always been envied not having to report to the office every day at precisely 9 a.m. Now, hybrid and remote work are within everyone’s reach. Before deciding on working remotely, one needs to consider its advantages and disadvantages.
Firstly, working from home seems like a dream come true. Not only hours of being stuck in traffic, but also a lot of money spent on gas and public transport tickets, can be saved daily. Secondly, the employee has the freedom to dress in whatever they want, sit in the pose they find most comfortable and listen to whatever makes them focus. Moreover, if sitting in front of the computer causes backache, there is no problem with a 15‑minute yoga session to relieve stress and tension. The benefits seem endless.
There are, however, many downsides to the home office as well. The most obvious one is the fact that one’s home, which should be a place to relax, becomes one’s office. This creates a risk of being overworked. Working overtime becomes easy and tempting, but it could be at the expense of family and social life. What is more, there are hidden costs of home office dictated by the need to buy an appropriate desk and chair. The additional expenses also include electricity and an internet connection.
Summing up, it seems undeniable that remote work has as many pros as cons. It can be beneficial to our health and give us more time for ourselves and our families, as well as our wallets. However, there are costs that have to be considered and if we’re not wise about them, they might do more damage than good to our well‑being.
