To my mind, the first thing that is obligatory in public places is the proper entrance to restrooms. Public toilets, in general, leave much to be desired, but there should be a few designed especially for people with dysfunctions; with no stairs, no barriers, nor other obstacles. In addition, there are a lot of mothers who struggle with changing a diaper on their babies as there are hardly any changing stations.

Exercise 8

You have just come back from a holiday destination which had a great number of facilities for the disabled. Write a blog post (100–150 words) in which you:

inform your readers where you travelled;
describe a situation you saw when a disabled person was struggling with something and how it ended;
describe one facility for the disabled that made the biggest impression on you;
say what kind of things for the disabled you think are worth implementing in public spaces in your country and why.

I have just come back from... I went there because/as...,

One day while…, I saw… A person couldn’t…, which made it impossible to…, The person was struggling hard to…, Luckily,...

That situation made me think…, I started to pay more attention to…, It turned out that…, Not only is the place accessible enough, but also…, I was truly impressed with it! That is the best thing I have ever seen!

I wish there were more places of this kind in Poland… It would be great if…, I also think that…

Hi there!

I have just come back from holiday in Sydney, Australia. It was great, so I want to share my experience with you.

One day when sightseeing, I saw a blind man struggling with finding direction. He looked helpless trying to reach the traffic lights. A random passer‑by told him that there are Braille street signs which he could use to find his way. Thanks to that, he found his way.

I was very impressed by this. In Sydney, all street signs have tactic and Braille which warn against potential barriers such as stairs or crossings. They even produce sound signals like „beeps” or voice sound. I think it’s ingenious!

I wish there were more such solutions where I live. I wish we had Braille signs as well. It would also be great if there were sound systems for the blind at traffic lights, so they could cross safely.
