Working in the press industry presents numerous challenges these days. One of them is a strong competition with independent sources of information, widely available on the internet. In the past, newspapers were the main source of news for thousands of readers. Many types of newspapers developed, catering for the variety of readers’ needs and preferences. (7.1) Tu uzupełnij. Their focus, gossip stories and sensational reports, can now be found easily on social media and in rss readers. (7.2) Tu uzupełnij. Another issue is the increasing cost of printing newspapers. Paper prices have been continuously rising in recent years and it is difficult to imagine a title costing only a few pennies, like the original New York Sun. (7.3) Tu uzupełnij. However, The Washington Post or The Daily Telegraph continue to be popular among many readers. Also, contemporary readers, having access to many other sources of news, are becoming more and more critical about what they read. (7.4) Tu uzupełnij. Now, not only are they able to find free access to news on the internet, but opinions formed by press editorial boards are also cross-examined by numerous professional critics. (7.5) Tu uzupełnij. All the above factors make work in the press industry challenging and difficult these days. However, it doesn't seem that newspapers are an endangered species just yet, as many readers still appreciate traditional, paper editions and enjoy reading newspapers. A – Many of them used to take opinions written in the press for granted. B – Tabloids, which have been popular since the release of The New York Sun back in 1833, offered attractive content to be read on the bus or train. C – Their job is to look at issues discussed in the press from many points of view and deliver an objective commentary. D – Broadsheet papers don’t usually offer these, as they are typical to tabloids, with their argumentative statements and flashy headlines. E – This means that fewer and fewer readers may be willing to pay for content that is otherwise free on the web. F – Some broadsheet papers have decreased their size accordingly, only preserving their name and character, but getting similar to tabloids in size.
