The documentary about the importance of seeds for global food security was a real eye‑opener.

They basically are banks of genetic material which can be used for research and to recreate crops which have been wiped out as a result of military conflicts or natural catastrophes.

The Global Seed Vault is special because it contains duplicates of seeds stored in other similar facilities. It is located in Svalbard because it’s a safe region unaffected by wars.

I also learnt that most seeds used by farmers nowadays are commercially produced hybrid seeds.

The plants grown from them have much desired characteristics such as durability and long shelf‑life. It was made clear that in the face of climate change, these kinds of seeds are the guarantor of the world’s food security.
