Exercise 4

Read the text with four missing sentences. In each gap (5.1-5.4) write a letter that corresponds to the missing sentence (A-F), so the text makes logical sense. One sentence doesn’t fit with any gap. I believe that many young people have difficulty making friends because they’re too shy or scared to take the initiative. In their heads are ideas of how everything will go wrong. For example, many people are afraid they will make a fool of themselves. 5.1 1. C, 2. F, 3. B, 4. E, 5. D, 6. A However, one should ask himself or herself: is looking like a fool really such a bad thing?

Let’s be logical. When you initiate contact, there are only two options. You will befriend someone or you will not. Why is the latter option such a scary prospect? 5.2 1. C, 2. F, 3. B, 4. E, 5. D, 6. A Furthermore, if the person makes us feel silly for trying to reach out, it's on them, not on us. We aren’t fools because we tried and didn’t succeed! 5.3 1. C, 2. F, 3. B, 4. E, 5. D, 6. A

The other option is making a friend. All friendships have to start somewhere and most of them begin with a single conversation. 5.4 1. C, 2. F, 3. B, 4. E, 5. D, 6. A There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain. Remember this the next time you’re scared of reaching out!

A. Isn’t the prospect of a friend good enough to take the initiative?
B. Such scenarios can effectively stop them from initiating contact.
C. What’s more, we’re not only fools but we’re also outrageous.
D. After all, not every conversation will end up in a lifelong friendship.
E. Quite the opposite, we are confident and friendly.
F. As we all know, all conversations end up in a lifelong friendship.
