Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the U.S.A. and Canada. The reason for the celebration is expressing gratitude for all the good things people have experienced throughout the year. The tradition goes back to the 16th or 17th century when the settlers wanted to thank God for the harvest and for the help received from Native Americans.
The main element of the celebration of Thanksgiving is a family meal, featuring turkey and other dishes. Most people also try to support the homeless or lonely people at this time. Some families travel long distances to visit their relatives on Thanksgiving Day.
The traditional Thanksgiving foods are roast turkey and mashed potatoes. These are accompanied by gravy and brussel sprouts. The meal is completed by a pumpkin pie for dessert.

Dear Sally,
I want to tell you about my visit to the USA. I had always dreamt about this trip and it finally came true. I went there with my uncle and we got there just in time for Thanksgiving Day!
My uncle and I went to visit all our relatives on Thanksgiving Day, so we had to spend almost 4 hours in the car. The traffic was really heavy. We also went to New York City to see the incredible Macy’s Parade. It was very colourful and the music was great!
But the best part was the Thanksgiving dinner. We had a delicious roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and a green bean casserole. My uncle also made a traditional pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top. I really liked it the most and I am thinking of baking it for my family here in Poland.
