In the past few months, I’ve been experiencing severe stress due to the situation at my workplace. My boss requires us to work overtime because he believes a 40‑hour workweek is for “weaklings”. This means I have almost no time for my personal life and it’s taking a toll on my mental health. I’m unsure of what to do. Please, help!

Dear Worried Tom,
I’m really sorry about what you’re going through. In my opinion, we shouldn’t allow work to overshadow our personal lives because that’s how you end up with burnout or depression. If possible, I’d consider stepping back and prioritising your mental health and wellbeing over work. It might seem difficult at first, but believe me – you will feel so much better! Maybe you could try to look for guidance as you learn to work on your inner peace? You can join a yoga or meditation class to start off. I wish you the best of luck!

I find that I prioritise my work life over my personal life. I like to tell myself I feel content, but my family has started to distance themselves from me and I don’t like it at all. I wish I could achieve a better work‑life balance, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. Any advice?

Dear Marie,
I think that your problem is very common. So many people aim to be the best workers they can be, so they prioritise their job over their families. As you can already see, it affects your personal life. If I were you, I’d try to take a step back from work and realise that family and friends are more important than any work assignment. Maybe you could request a week off and spend some quality time with them? You never know what awaits you in the future and you may regret seeing them as a lower priority.

MINDFULNESS – Psychological Manipulation or a Solution?
Have you ever experienced being completely overwhelmed by daunting tasks? If yes, this article is for you. You probably have had no time for yourself, have suffered from burnout and have been simply overworked. Am I right?
Our inability to find a good work‑life balance seems to be a specific pandemic of the contemporary world. It happened to me – I was simply addicted to my job, finding it the most important thing, regardless of what my body was constantly trying to tell me.
Finally, I suffered burnout, something inevitable for such a workaholic as me, and I started to search for solutions. Fortunately, I came across a post on social media about a mindfulness workshop and I decided to take part in this event, as it seemed unfamiliar but fresh and intriguing.
I was skeptical when I entered a room full of barefoot strangers sitting on mats and breathing deeply. I felt confused, even pretty embarrassed at first but I knew I had to overcome these feelings and try to help myself. The man who was in charge was speaking in a calm and quiet voice and instructed us what to do step by step. I learnt mediation techniques and did breathing exercises. Did I feel better? I have been better since I began practising mindfulness every day!
Even if you are an extremely rational person, do not hesitate to try such workshops. It really doesn’t matter if mindfulness is manipulation of a genius psychologist as long as it works.
