Congruent figures
Definition: Congruent figures
The figures with the same shape and size are called congruent figurescongruent figurescongruent figures.
The properties of congruent triangles:
Criterion SSS: Two triangles are congruent only when three sides of one triangle equal the corresponding three sides of the other triangle.
Criterion SAS: Two triangles are congruent only when two sides of one triangle and the angle between them are equal to corresponding two sides of the other triangle and the angle between them.
Criterion ASA: Two triangles are congruent only when the length of the side of one triangle and two adjacent angles are equal to the length of the side and the two adjacent angles of the corresponding triangle.
Two equilateral triangles CBF and ABE were built on sides AB and BC of square ABCD. Prove that DF = DE.
Hint: Prove that triangles EAD and DCF are congruent.
Task 3
Compare your solution to the one presented in the applet. Consider if line segments DF and DE will be equal also when quadrangle ABCD will be a rectangle.

According to the conditions of the task AM = AP = CM = CN = PB = BN = a/2 and the angles between the sides of triangle ABC equal 60°.
So, triangles MAP, MCN and NBP are congruent according to criterion SAS and equilateral (equilateral with angle 60° between the arms). If they are congruent equilateral triangles, MP = MN = NP = a/2 and triangle MNP is also equilateral.

Let's consider two cases.
1. The corresponding sides are the arms of the isosceles triangle. There are many isosceles triangles with equal arms, but bases of different lengths. For congruent triangles with equal arms, for example, we need to define the angle between the arms (SAS criterion)
2. The corresponding sides are the arm of the triangle and its base. This means that we know the length of the third side (the second arm of the triangle) and, according to the SSS criterion, the triangles are congruent.
