Introductionm26a1b070ed3cf9c1_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher prepares for each group of students:

- a set of 6 cards. There is one of the following writings on each of them:

s = 56 m, t = 8 s, v = ?;

s = 720 km, t = 9 h, v = ?;

v = 60 kmh,  s = 420 km, t = ?;

v = 4 kmh,  s = 8000 m, t = ?;

v = 82 kmh,  t = 3 h, s = ?;

v = 10 ms, t = 7 min, s = ?;

- a set of three cards cut out of a cardboard with the letters A,B or C.

The students take part in a learning game to revise the material about speedspeedspeed and the units of length and timetimetime.

The teacher presents the test.

The students work in groups of three or four. They make up the name of their team and write it on the board. The teacher presents the. The team which first gives the correct answer: A, B or C gets a point. The teacher writes the points to the appropriate team. The winner is the team with the greatest number of points.

Procedurem26a1b070ed3cf9c1_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: calculating speedspeedspeed, distancedistancedistance and timetimetime.

The students work individually using their computers. They are going to analyse the slideshow concerning the methods of calculating the distance with given speed and time and calculating the time with given speed and distance.

[Slideshow2]

Discussion: How can we calculate the distance if  we know the speed and the time of the journey? How can we calculate the time if we know the distance of the journey and the speed it has been travelled at?

The students come up with the following solutions:

- The distance travelled is calculated by multiplying the speed by the timetimetime.

- The time is calculated by dividing the distance travelled by the speed.

Using the gained information the students do the task concerning the distance, the time and the speed on their own. Then, in pairs they compare the results.

Task 1

The vehicle has moved at the speed of v in the time of t. Calculate the distance the vehicle has travelled.

a) v = 15 ms, t = 2 min

b) v = 60 kmh, t = 45 min.

Task 2

The vehicle has travelled the distance of d, at the speed of  v. Calculate the time spent on the journey.

a) d = 42 km, v = 14 kmh.

b) d =7,5 km, v = 25 ms.

The students do the task in the groups of 2 or 3 people.

Task 3

Darek and Adam decided to meet at the swimming pool. Darek lives 11 kilometres away from the swimming pool and Adam 7 kilometres away from it. Adam cycles his bike at the speed of 14 kmh, and Darek drives his motorbike at the speed of 44 kmh.  What time should they leave their houses to arrive at the swimming pool at 12:35?m26a1b070ed3cf9c1_1527752256679_0Darek and Adam decided to meet at the swimming pool. Adam cycles his bike at the speed of 14 kmh, and Darek drives his motorbike at the speed of 44 kmh.  What time should they leave their houses to arrive at the swimming pool at 12:35?

Task 4

Ann and Kate live 3 kilometres away from each other. They decided to meet so they left their houses fifteen minutes ago and went towards each other. Ania goes at the speed of 3,5 kmh and Kate at the speed of 5 kmh.  How far away are they the girls from each other at the moment?m26a1b070ed3cf9c1_1527752263647_0Ann and Kate live 3 kilometres away from each other. Task 5

The cheetah runs at the speed of 30 ms, chasing the gazelle running away at the speed of 25 ms. How long will it take the cheetah to catch up the gazelle if the distance between them was 40 m at the beginning?

The students present their work. Next they take part in the learning game to revise calculating the speed, the distance and the time.

Each group receives the set of 6 cards. The students do the calculation written on the cards. The winner is the team which first will get all the correct results.

An extra task:

Find out on the Internet the information about the speedspeedspeed of light and the distancedistancedistance from the Earth to the Sun. Calculate how many minutes it will take for the sun light to reach the Earth. Round the result to decimals.

Lesson summarym26a1b070ed3cf9c1_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

The students do the summarising tasks.

Then they sum up the class drawing the conclusions to memorise:

- The distance travelled is calculated by multiplying the speed by the time.

- The time is calculated by dividing the distance travelled by the speed.
