Planet Earth is Our HomeDue to growing concernsgrowing concerns about what the human race is doing to its own planet, many people came togethercame together and created what is now known as “Earth Day.” The Earth Day movement was established and ledled by John McConnel, an activistactivist and a newspaper publisher.
McConnell convinced the United Nations to honourhonour a day when differences of opinion could be set asideset aside, and people from across the globe could come together and show supportshow support for environmental protectionenvironmental protection. They would focus on protecting the Earth’s valuable natural resourcesnatural resources.
The first Earth Day took place in March 1970. It has now grown in popularitygrown in popularity and is a part of mainstreammainstream culture. 192 countries and over a billion people celebrate this day each year.
The second Earth Day was on April 22nd, 1970. It happened after an environmental disasterenvironmental disaster. An oil welloil well off the coast of Santa Barbara in California released over three million gallonsgallons of oil which polluted the local coastline and a large number of habitatshabitats. This motivatedmotivated many activists to fight for greater environmental regulationsenvironmental regulations in a national protest. The protest on April 22nd was a massive success, with over 20 million people showing their support for the cause.
Earth Day has shown many people that Mother Earth is suffering. It has highlighted issues that we should addressaddress to save our planet. They include problems such as global warmingglobal warming, climate changeclimate change, forest fires, rising temperatures, acid rainacid rain, and deforestationdeforestation.
The motto of Earth Day 2022 was “Invest in Our Planet.” Its focus was to involveinvolve governments, citizens, and businesses to take actiontake action. The celebrations managed to bring togetherbring together over 1 billion people and organisations who would claim collective responsibilityclaim collective responsibility for the planet.
Thanks to Earth Day, we can encourage the publicthe public to consider environmental issuesenvironmental issues and all work together to turn back the damage that we have done to Mother Earth.
