Students discuss the rules of comparing numbers in pairs.

The teacher writes questions on the board:

The teacher puts boxes in different colours next to questions. Each pair of students gets three coloured pieces of paper (according to colours of the boxes). Students write down answers on pieces of paper and put them into proper boxes.

Three volunteers read answers from pieces of paper. Then all students together formulate rules of comparing numbers.

1. Out of two numbers marked on the number line, the one that is located farther from the zero is greater.
2. Out of two natural numbers, the one that has more digits is greater. If numbers have the same number of digits, we compare digits in each rows of both numbers, starting from the highest.
3. To compare two decimal fractions, we compare the whole parts first and then fraction parts.
4. If two common fractions have the same denominators, then the one that has a greater numerator is greater. If two fractions have the same numerators, then the one that has a smaller denominator is greater. If two fractions have different numerators and denominators, then we need to find the common numerator or denominator and then compare them.
