Lesson plan (English)
Topic: Geographical coordinates - exercises
Target group
Students of the sixth grade of elementary school
Core curriculum
VI. Geographical coordinates: latitude and longitude; mathematical and geographical location of points and areas; meridional and latitudinal extent.
Student:
1. reads the latitude and longitude of selected points on the globe and on the map;
2. on the basis of given geographical coordinates, indicates the location of points and areas on the maps at various scales;
3. determines in the terrain the coordinates of any points (using a map or GPS)
Purpose of the lesson
Determining the longitude and latitude of points on the map and determining the location of a given geographic object. On the basis of geographical coordinates.

Introduction
The teacher explains the aim of the lesson and together with students determines the success criteria to be achieved.
Begins classes from the reminder of the terms of latitude and longitude. Uses the scheme entitled „Diagram depicting latitude and longitude”. Then he uses the illustration of a cartographic and geographical grid to guide students to further work on the lesson.
Realization
Students use the interactive board to organize their knowledge.
The teacher distributes geographical atlases and physical globes to each pair of students. Students perform the following tasks:
- using the geographical grid determine the geographical coordinates of London, Rome and Washington;
-using the cartographic grid of your choice determine the geographical coordinates of Barcelona, Seoul, Vilnius;
- determine the geographical coordinates of the islands: Crete, Madagascar, Java;
- draw the cartographic grid by inserting into it one of the selected islands.The students discuss the work done on the forum, compare the results.
Students working in pairs using the physical map of Poland, orientate the geographical location of the following cities: Grudziądz, Elbląg, Lublin, Zielona Góra, and Kalisz. They read the geographical coordinates in relation to degrees and minutes. The indicated students give the results of their work.
Students on mobile phones start the GPS device and locate the given city, for example, Krynica Morska. They read the information that GPS gives. Discussion on the class forum about the use of modern technology and its effectiveness.
Students perform an exercise consisting in recognizing objects on the basis of given coordinates..
Summary
The teacher asks: If there was going to be a test on the material we have covered today, what questions do you think would you have to answer? If the students do not manage to name all the most important questions, the teacher may complement their suggestions.
To summarize the lesson, students do the interactive exercise.
The following terms and recordings will be used during this lesson
Terms

Geographical coordinates - exercises
The system of meridians and parallels (including the poles and equator) shown on a model of the Earth, that is, a globe, is known as a geographical grid. If we use specialist mathematical methods, this can be depicted on a flat surface. This is known as a cartographic grid and can be the basis for plotting maps.
Modern electronic devices and the whole system associated with them make it very easy to precisely determine the geographical coordinates of any place on Earth. This can be done by using a GPS (ang. Global Positioning System).
Use the application from the e‑textbook and identify the location of the points marked on the map, them complete the following exercise.
