Have you ever….? ; sound impressive…, Don’t you think….; have the courage to…; he stood up for…., he’s a proponent of…; she’s an inspiration for …..; he didn’t get disheartened, even though….;
The woman who wouldn’t get up
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be discriminated against ? Not to be allowed to do things that other people take for granted? To be treated like a worse kind of citizen? In response some people become violent. Others become disheartened. And still others change the world. Rosa Parks was such a person. Born in 1913, she grew up in a world where African‑Americans suffered huge inequality. They had hardly any rights, were segregated at every step and were expected to humbly accept it. In 1955 Rosa, an African‑American herself, was asked to get up so that a white man could take her seat on a bus, and she refused. She was arrested for it and her attitude became an inspiration for many people, eventually leading to bus boycotts that were part of the movements demanding equality for African‑Americans.
It might not sound impressive but huge changes start with small steps. Our world must become safer, cleaner, less divided. Don’t you think many such changes start with us? Regular people need to question old values and beliefs. To have the courage to do things differently. To protest. But there’s already too much violence in the world, so it’s important to do it peacefully and inspire others to follow, even if you’re risking your freedom. That’s what Rosa Parks did and that’s what young people today could learn from her.
If we talk more about such people and try to follow their example, the world will be a much better place.
