IX. Polygons and circles. The student:

4) recognises and identifies : the square, the rectangle, the rhombus, the parallelogram and the trapezium.

5) is familiar with the most important properties of the square, the rectangle, the rhombus, the parallelogram and the trapezium; recognises the figures symmetrical about the axis and indicates the symmetry axes of figures.

Introductionm5060207ae3dfd915_1528450127855_0Introduction

The students draw the rectangles and the squares on the board. They discuss the differences and similarities between these figures. They point the vertices and the angles and describe the mutual position of the sides.

The students write the description of the rectangle and the squaresquaresquare in their notebooks.

- the rectangle is a quadrangle with four right angles,
- the square is the rectangle with all equal sides.

Task 1

The students work individually using their computers.

They are going to watch the method of drawing the rectangle using the setsquare. Next, they are going to use the information to draw on their own the rectangle LATO with the length of 4 cm and the widthwidthwidth of 3 cm.

Task 2

The students indicate the segments LT and OA in the rectangle they have drawn. They specify their mutual position and their length. They compare the lengthlengthlength between the intersection point of the segments LT and OA and the vertices of the rectangle.

The students discuss what they have noticed.

The teacher tells the students the segments LT and OA are called the diagonals of the rectanglerectanglerectangle LATO.

The students come up with the following conclusions:

- the segments connecting the opposite vertices of the quadranglequadranglequadrangle are called the diagonals,
- the diagonals are of the equal length,
- the intersection point of the diagonals divides them into two equal parts.

Task 3

The students draw the squaresquaresquare with the side of 4 cm. They mark its diagonals and measure their lengths. They compare the length between the intersection point and the vertices of the square. They specify the measure of the angles of the intersection of the diagonals.

They come up with the following conclusions:

- the diagonals of the square are of the equal length,
- the intersection point of the diagonals divides them into two equal parts,
- the diagonals of the square are perpendicular.

- the intersection point of the diagonals divides them into two equal parts,
- the diagonals of the square are perpendicular.

An extra task:

Make five squares using twelve sticks. Can the sticks be arranged in one way only?

Lesson summarym5060207ae3dfd915_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarising the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusions to memorize:

- the segments connecting the opposite vertices of the quadrangle are called the diagonals,
- the diagonals of the rectangle are of the equal length and divide into halves,
- the diagonals of the square are of the equal length, divide into halves and they are perpendicular to each other.
