In 2016, the highest number of Polish emigrants lived in Great Britain. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS) it concerned 778 thousand people. Germany came second - 687 thousand of Poles lived there for over three months. 2. The aims. The emigration of Poles in search of a job or a better place to live is not a new phenomenon - it reached its peak on the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the communities of people of Polish origins are called Polonia. 3. Detailed estimates. A detailed estimation of the number of Poles living abroad is quite a challenge. When Poland regained independence, the number was said to exceed 6 million people. By now, this number may have tripled. It is estimated between 14 and even 18 million, and bigger communities of Poles and Polonia are located in 32 countries. 4. The reason. The main reason of leaving the country is finding employment. This is why 75% of all the emigrants have left Poland. Other reasons include: education, family matters and medical treatment. 5. Gender and emigration. Its mainly men that decide to look for a job abroad. Women state family matters as the reason for the trip most often. In total, however, there are more women abroad than men (51% to 49%). 6. Education. Emigrants are mostly young and well educated. Over 20% of them have graduated from a university, and over 40% - from high school. 7. Emigration. The number of people affected by emigration indirectly is much higher. Almost 70% of Poles know somebody who went abroad and decided to stay there.
