Famous American Symbols
The most important American symbol is the flagflag. It has three colours: red, blue and white has got fifty starsstars on a blue rectanglerectangle. They representrepresent the fifty statesstates of the United States of America. It also has red and white stripesstripes. They represent the first thirteen colonies. People put the American flag in many places like post offices, schools, hospitals and even the Moon!
Another symbol is the Liberty BellLiberty Bell. You can see it in the Liberty Bell Centre in Philadelphia. It rang for the first time in July 1776 to celebratecelebrate the first reading of the Declaration of IndependenceDeclaration of Independence. It made a terrible sound and it brokebroke. The Liberty Bell is the symbol for American independenceindependence and freedomfreedom.
The Statue of LibertyStatue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island and welcomeswelcomes all the people who arrive in New York by sea. It is a sculpturesculpture of a woman and a symbol of America’s fight forfight for freedom. It was a giftgift to the USA from France in 1884.
“The Star‑Spangled Banner” is the national anthem of the United States of America. You can hear it at sport eventssport events and schools. Poet Francis Scott Key wrote it in 1814 when he saw the U.S. flag during the fightsfights with the British. He was very happy because the Americans won the fight for freedom.
The Bald EagleBald Eagle is the national symbol of America. It represents powerpower. It became the national symbol in 1782. You can see this symbol on dollar coinscoins and banknotesbanknotes. You can also see it in the president’s office in the White HouseWhite House.
