- Explain the concept of ordering a set.

- Give examples of set orderings.

- Why is it important to sort a set? What benefits does it bring?

On the basis of the discussion students formulate the definition of sortingsortingsorting .

Most often our data are large sets of information stored in many rows and columns of the spreadsheet. That is why we need to sort whole rows or columns. In such a case the key element of sortingsortingsorting is to select the worksheet area which will be sorted (see also: Tables – at the end of the document). Most often incorrect selection of the sorting area leads to data loss.

Sort order  
ascending (A‑Z):
- numbers – from the smallest to the largest,
- text – alphabetical order from A to Z,
- dates – from the oldest to the newest.
descending (Z‑A):  
- numbers – from the largest to the smallest,  
- text – alphabetical order from Z to A,

If Excel cannot sort given data itself, we can select particular parts of the data by using other functions. These parts can be sorted separately.
