Introductionmf8848776512f958b_1528450127855_0Introduction

Teacher prepares a set of 36 cards for each group. There is one of the following expression on each card: 1PLN, 100 gr, 1 gr, 0.01PLN, 1 t, 1,000 kg, 1 kg, 0.001 t, 1 kg, 1,000 g, , 1 g, 0.001 kg, 1 kg, 100 dag, 1 dag, 0.01 kg, 1 dag, 10 g, 1 g, 0,1 dag, 1 km, 1,000 m, 1 m, 0.001 km, 1 m, 100 cm, 1 cm, 0.01 m, 1 dm, 10 cm,
1 cm, 0.1 dm, 1 cm, 10 mm, 1 mm, 0.1 cm,

The students revise the dependencies between the monetary units and the units of length and mass by taking part in the Memory game.

Students work in groups of four‑five . They sit around the table and put the cards in front of them the writing side face‑down. The one student takes two cards. If the expressions written in them are equalequalequal he puts them away and takes another two. If the expressions are not equal he covers them and finishes his turn. The student on his left continues the game. The game is finished when all the cards are found.

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: writing the double unit expressions in the form of decimal fractiondecimal fractiondecimal fraction and the decimal fraction in a form of the double unit expressions.

The students work individually using their computers. They are going to analyse the slideshow concerning the double unit expressions.

[Interactive graphics]

The students use the information they have gained to write the double unit expressions in a form of the decimal fraction and the decimal fractions in a form of the double unit expressions. They compare the results they have gained.

Task 1

Write the expressions below by using the decimal fractions.

a) 17 PLN 5 gr = … PLN

b) 1 m 68 cm = … m

c) 8 kg 25 g = … kg

d) 9 cm 1 mm = … cm

e) 45 km 60 m = … km

f) 3 t 25 kg = … t

Task 2

Write the given numbers by using the double unit expressions.

a) 7.9 PLN= … zł … gr

b) 75.5 km = … km … m

c) 3.2 dm = … dm … cm

d) 15.01 kg = … kg … g

e) 32.7 cm = … cm … mm

f) 6.05 kg = … kg … dag

The students work in pairs completing the tasks with the double unit expressions.

Task 3

Compare the values of the presented expressions filling the gap with the appropriate sign of greater than, less than, equal.mf8848776512f958b_1527752263647_0Compare the values of the presented expressions filling the gap with the appropriate sign of greater than, less than, equal.

a) 73,4 km … 73 km 40 m

b) 56 kg 300 g … 56.3 kg

c) 38.4 PLN … 38 PLN 4 gr

Task  4

Kate is 1 m 53 cm tall. Her brother is taller by 0,11 m than Kate and her sister is shorter by 7 cm than Kate.

a) How tall are Kate’s brother and sister?

b) How many centimetres is Kate’s sister shorter than Kate’s brother?

An extra task:

Find out on the Internet the information about micrometres and nanometres. Complete the gaps with the appropriate numbers.

a) 3 m 456 μm = … m

b) 6,000013 m = … m … μm

c) 15,00000007 m = … m … nm

d) 8 m 350 000 nm = … m.

Lesson summarymf8848776512f958b_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

The students do the summarising tasks.

Then they sum up the class drawing the conclusions to memorise:

- The mono unit expressions are written by using only one unit.
- The double unit expressions are written by using two units of the same type.
