Influencerzy w mediach społecznościowych to zupełnie nowe zjawisko w naszej kulturze. Wielu młodych ludzi ich kocha i poświęca im dużo czasu. Starsi raczej ich nie kojarzą i nie rozumieją. How I peeked into my child’s world
Joanna Sobierska‑Paczesny How I peeked into my child’s world

I wanted to be an understanding and involved mother, so I asked my children to share with me things which are important to them. I know they spend a lot of time watching streamers and influencers, so I watched a few videos with them. My positive attitudepositive attitudepositive attitude was tested within the first few seconds. The guy had such a sloppy manner of speaking that I missed half of what he was saying. “Stay positivestay positiveStay positive,” I said to myself. The video was kind of a news report, which made me hopeful. “He’s setting a good examplesetting a good example [to set a good example]setting a good example,” I thought. Unfortunately, most items referred to people I’d never heard of. Yet my kids were excited, explaining to me who’s who. My heart sankmy heart sank [to have one’s heart sink]My heart sank. These are the people they followfollow (verb)follow? AdmireadmireAdmire? Want to imitateimitateimitate? These cool idols to whom my kids devotedevote time to sth (verb)devote so many hours every day don’t use proper grammar, make unimpressiveunimpressiveunimpressive jokes, and don’t seem to have anything intelligent to say even though they talk a lot. We finished watching and I  kept my comments to myselfkept my comments to myself [keep sth to yourself]kept my comments to myself. But what do I do now? My kids idolizeidolizeidolize them…

What to watch? Who to watch?

Yes, I spend a lot of time watching influencers. Why? Sometimes out of boredom, so theoretically I could watch less. But not to watch them at all? No way. My three favourite streamers are not people who do crazy things to get more followersfollowers [follower]followers. One of them has sort of a news bulletin presenting recent events with a great sense of humoursense of humoursense of humour, so I’m on top of what’s going on. The other two film their everyday routine – the walk to school, the physics project, the fight they had with their friends, the scrambled eggs that burnt and the divorce of their parents that hit them like a ton of bricks. So, what’s in it for me? We have so much in commonhave so much in common [have much in common]have so much in common. It’s like having a friend. They’re always there, sharing their problems with me. Problems I can relate torelate to sthrelate to. I’m  impressedimpressedimpressed with how they handle them. It makes me think “I can do that too!” It’s so much more real than the so‑calledso‑calledso‑called problems of celebrities. It’s also more real in that I can write to them and get a reply. I also respectrespect (verb)respect their positive attitudepositive attitudepositive attitude – I think of that when I’m downI’m down [be down]I’m down and try to be like them. I wish my mum would understand it.
