XII. Introduction to combinatorics and probability. The student:

1) identifies sets of objects, analyses and calculates how many object of given properties are there, in cases that do not require applying rules of multiplication or addition;

2) makes simple experiments, like flipping the coin, rolling a six‑sided dice, rolling many‑sided dice and drawing a sphere from a set of spheres, analyses them and calculates probability of events in experiments.

Introductionmbf529c8892b02f1f_1528450127855_0Introduction

At home, students search available knowledge sources (films, animations, educational materials) for information about the classical definition of probability. Then, they make notes to systemize obtained knowledge.

Procedurembf529c8892b02f1f_1528446435040_0Procedure

Task
Representatives of the class chosen by the teacher shortly discuss results of their research and answer teacher’s questions.

[Interactive illustration]

The classical definition of probability:

- Let us discuss experiments in which all elementary events have the same probability and Ω is a set of all elementary events.

Probability P(A) of the event A is the quotient of the number of favourable events by the number of all possible elementary events of this experimentexperiment/trialexperiment.

P(A)=AΩ

Students do exercises in pairs.

Task
We flip a coin three times. What is the probability of getting at least two heads? Write the set of all elementary events of this experiment.mbf529c8892b02f1f_1527752256679_0We flip a coin three times. What is the probability of getting at least two heads? Write the set of all elementary events of this experiment.

Task
How many lottery tickets are there, if there are 12 winning tickets and probability of getting a winning ticket is equal to 25?

Task
We draw one card from 52 cards. What is the probability of getting a red card?

Task
There are 3 white spheres and 4 black spheres in the box. We take one sphere from the box. If it is white, then we roll the dice once and if it is black, we roll the dice twice. Present this experiment on a tree diagram.mbf529c8892b02f1f_1527752263647_0There are 3 white spheres and 4 black spheres in the box. We take one sphere from the box. If it is white, then we roll the dice once and if it is black, we roll the dice twice. Present this experiment on a tree diagram.

The teacher sums up students’ work. The pair that did the obligatory exercises the fastest and did the extra task gets highest marks.

An extra task:
We roll a six‑sided dice twice. On three sides of the dice there is number 1, on two there is number 3 and on the last one there is number 4. Make a tree diagram for this experimentexperiment/trialexperiment and calculate the probability of getting the sum on both dices equal to 2.

Lesson summarymbf529c8892b02f1f_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the revision exercises.

Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise.
