Introductionm9f4f22fc2193f564_1528450127855_0Introduction

Students revise various methods of mental additionadditionaddition of natural numbers.

They do addition using the calculator:

a) 155 + 234

b) 135 + 288

Discussion:

Do we always carry calculator with ourselves?

Is it easy to make such calculations mentally?

The teacher informs students that during this class they will learn to add great numbers without using the calculator.

Procedurem9f4f22fc2193f564_1528446435040_0Procedure

Task
Students work individually, using computers. They open the Slideshow and observe how we perform long addition of natural numberslong addition of natural numberslong addition of natural numbers.

[Slideshow]

After having completed the exercise, they present results of their observations.

Conclusions:

- Long addition of natural numbers starts with writing numbers under one another, in such a way that ones are under ones, tens under tens, etc. We put a line under the numbers.
- Then we add ones and write the result under the line, in the place of ones. Then we add tens and write the result under the line, in the place of tens, etc.
- If during addition in one of the places we exceed the ten threshold, then we add the first digit to the higher place.

Students work in pairs. After having completed the exercise, they exchange notebooks and verify their solutions using calculators.

Task
Do the long addition:
a) 254 + 645
b) 6325 + 1564
c) 2645 + 9654
d) 3698 +4587

Task
Do the exercises by performing long additionadditionaddition. Give the answers:

a) 36 students from IV class, 47 from V class and 46 from VII class took part in the mathematical contest. How many students from this school were taking part in this contest?

b) Tomek has 125 stickers and Marcel has 30 stickers more. How many stickers do they have together?

c) Magda had 365 zł. Her granddad gave her 350 zł and her aunt 300 zł. Does she have enough savings to buy a bike that costs 1000 zł?

Educational game.

The teacher divides students into four persons groups.

The teacher puts enveloped on the desk. There is a name and a price of some products on each one of them.

Students ‘buy’ the products so that the amount spent on shopping is as high as possible, but does not exceed 1000 zł.

The student who does the most expensive shopping wins. Exceeding 1000 zł eliminates the student from the game.

Price cards.

Students do the revision exercises.

Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise:
