I’m not sure what other people have in their first aid kits, but I always keep a few key items. The first one is, of course, disposable gloves since we want to keep things sterile, don’t we? For that matter, I always carry antiseptic solution as well as saline in my kit. You don’t want the wound to get infected and those two can go a long way in ensuring that. Finally, I carry gauze, a few dressings and a bandage along with scissors and sticky tape. I can never secure the bandage properly without them.

In terms of first aid, a responsive person is someone who reacts to your stimulation (for example, the tap‑shout‑tap method) or is fully awake. Once you establish they’re responsive, you should ask them to consent to administer first aid. Then, you ought to carry out a short interview in which you ask them about their symptoms, allergies and medical conditions they may have. Once that’s done, assess whether what they say matches the condition you can see them in. At last, you should call 1‑1-2 and keep calm while waiting for EMS to arrive.

In terms of first aid, an unresponsive person is someone who doesn’t react to your stimulation (for example, the tap‑shout‑tap method). They may not be fully awake or they may be entirely unconscious, most often due to life‑threatening injuries, such as problems with breathing. In such a case, you should call 1‑1-2 immediately or ask a bystander to call it for you. Next, you need to administer first aid to the best of your ability. If the person indeed has issues with breathing, you may need to perform CPR.

No two first aid kits are the same. Their contents depend on who’s using them and for what reasons. For example, a kit of a first responder will be very different to what you can find in your at‑home one. However, we can all aim to create a simple first aid kit that can help us greatly in the case of an accident. Here’s what I’ve learned!

First of all, every kit should contain PPE (personal protection equipment), such as disposable gloves which can help us keep things sterile as well as avoid cross‑contamination. Then, we should stock our kits with products, like antiseptic solution and saline, so we can clean all kinds of wounds and scrapes. To ensure those injuries don’t get infected, we should also keep gauze, dressings and bandages. If you’re like me and can’t secure your bandages, be sure to pack safety pins and sticky tape as well! And let’s not forget about scissors — remember that some items (like gauze) need to be cut to shape!

Finally, it’s a good idea to have a CPR mask in your kit. You may think it’s too much but you never know when you’ll need it. A CPR mask ensures you don’t get in contact with someone’s bodily fluids while performing CPR.

So, let’s stop wasting time and pack our first aid kits. We’ll be very glad we did once an accident occurs!
