Introductionmdd11ff3ba4883547_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher initiates a discussion about fontfontfont formatting in text editors.

What text editors do you know?

Does each of them enable changing the size, colour and appeareance of text?

Task 1

In the text editor installed on your computer find the buttons which enable changing the font parameters.

Text formatting is customizing the appearance of text to make it look like you want. In order to create the appropriate layout of your document, you must learn to change the properties of:

- a font
- a paragraph,
- a page.

You will learn how to do it during this lesson and the next ones.

Proceduremdd11ff3ba4883547_1528446435040_0Procedure

When we talk about formatting a fontfontfont, we mean changing:

- typefacetypefacetypeface,
- size,
- colour,
- style.

You can also apply predefined effects to a selected text.

There are two methods of applying formatting:

- if you want to change the formatting of a text which has already been typed, you must first select the specific part of the text and then format it by pressing the appropriate button or buttons,

- if you press e.g. the BoldboldBold button when no text is selected and the cursor is not placed within a word, the editor is switched to the bold mode. From now on a new text entered into this place will be typed in bold and this will apply until you switch off the Bold button or you move to another location in your document.

The terms ‘text’, ‘type’type‘type’ and ‘font’font‘font’ are interchangeable in colloquial usage. However you must know that they have a different meaning.

A glyph is a symbol representing a single character.

typetypetype is a particular glyph represented on a tangible medium (since the times of Guttenberg).

In computer technology, a font is a set of types of common characteristics recorded in a digital form, most commonly in a single file.

typefacetypefacetypeface is a complete set of the characters of a single font that defines its consistent design.

Fonts and sometimes even typefaces are commonly called types.

Serif fonts are fonts with serifs – extending features at the end of strokes in characters.

Sans‑serif fonts are fonts without serifs.

Proportional fonts contain characters of varying widths.

Monospaced (non‑proportional) fonts contain characters of the same width.

Task 2

In the text editor installed on your computer check what fonts you can use. Find the examples of the following fonts:

- a serif fontfontfont,
- a sans-serif fontserif fontserif font,
- a proportional font,
- a monospaced font.

The font parameters:

Your computer is equipped with a powerful set of various fonts. You can use any of them in your text editor. You can easily modify their basic parameters such as typefacetypefacetypeface, size or colour. Another operation frequently used in text editor is modifying the style of a font. Text can be typed in boldboldbold, italicsitalicsitalics or underlined, and this is called the font style.

[Illustration 2]

The tools for modifying the fontfontfont parameters can be found on the Home tab in the Font group. The Font dialogue box appears after selecting the icon in the bottom right corner of this group.

Task 3

Copy the following poem in the text editor installed on your computer.

Jiggling jellyfish

Oh, I wish I was a jiggling jellyfish.
Oh, I wish I was a jiggling jellyfish.
I would jiggle and I’d jive, with my friends I’d give high fives.
Oh, I wish I was a jiggling jellyfish.

Then format the particular elements of the poem as follows:

- the title –font:  Tahoma, font style: boldboldbold, fontfontfont colour:  green, font size – 16 points,
- the rest of the text – font: Comic Sans, font size: 12 points,
- find all the words ‘jellyfish’ and set the font style: italicsitalicsitalics and the font colour: blue,
- find all the words: ‘wish’ set the font style: underlined and the font colour: purple.

The principles of formatting text related to fonts:

- do not use the font size smaller than 12 points – it is important that the font size is proportional to the size of the document, the optimal font size for an A4 document is 12 points,

- do not use more than three different fonts in a single document – a text with the greater number of fonts is unclear and difficult to focus on.
