X. The number line. The coordinate system in a plane. The student:

2) finds the coordinates of the grid given in the drawing in the coordinate system in the plane;

3) draws the grids with given integer coordinates (of any sign) in the coordinate system in the plane.

Introductionm0b24f78815fcb59f_1528450127855_0Introduction

The students bring the squared paper for the lesson. He draws a square with the side length of 8 units. The vertical lines of the net are marked with letters A – H and the horizontal lines are marked with the numbers 1‑8.

The student also brings the squared paper with two squares drawn next to each other. The sides of the squares are 10 units long. The vertical lines of the net are marked with letters A‑J and the horizontal ones are marked with the numbers 1‑10.

Procedurem0b24f78815fcb59f_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher informs the students they are going to describe and mark the coordinates of the piece on the chessboard and the coordinates of the pointpointpoint on the BattleshipbattleshipBattleship grid.

ChesschessChess is a board game which has been known since the mid of the 16th century. It is played by two players who use the chessboard with 64 grids and a set of the pawns and chess figures.

[Illustration 1]

Each of the squares of the chessboard is described by using and ordered pair whose first element is a letter and the second is a number. These elements are called the coordinates.
Position D4 means the square which is situated at the intersection of the column marked with D and the line marked with 4.

On the basis of this information the students describe the positionpositionposition of the piecepiecepiece on the board.

Task 1

Describe the position of the pieces on the chessboardchessboardchessboard.

[Illustration 3]

Task 2

Open the applet and place the piece in the indicated square.

[Geogebra applet]

The students work using the squared paper with the square of 8 units drawn on it.

Task 3

Prepare the square of 8 units and colour the fields with given coordinates: C1, A5, F2, H8, D3.

In pairs the students play BattleshipbattleshipBattleship. They use a piece of paper with two squares with the sides of 10 grids drawn on it. On the left square the students draw the ships whose positionpositionposition will be guessed by the other student. The ships are placed vertically or horizontally. They cannot touch each other with their sides or the vertices. Each student is going to draw:

- one battleship /a four‑decker made of four squares,
- two cruisers /a three‑decker, each made of three squares,
- three destroyers /a two‑decker, each made of two squares,
- four submarines /a single‑decker, each made of one square.

On the right square the student ticks the “Hit “ ships of the opponent and the shots he has make.

Task 4

Play BattleshipbattleshipBattleship. The player announces the target square in the opponent's grid which is to be shot at by giving a pair of coordinates, e.g. A1.

If the ship is on the chosen square the opponent says “Hit” and you can continue the shooting by giving the next coordinates. If, as the result of the shots, all squares of the ship are destroyed the opponents says “Hit and sunk”.

If the square with given coordinates is empty the opponent says “Miss” and you change turns. The winner is the person who destroys the opposing player's fleet.

An extra task:

Find out the way of moving the knightknightknight. Place the knight on square E5. Give all possible positions of the piece in first move.

Lesson summarym0b24f78815fcb59f_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the summarising exercise.

Then together they sum up the classes drawing the conclusions to memorise:
