Introductionmf57deea21a304ec8_1528450127855_0Introduction

The student brings a small cardboard box to the class.

Before the lesson the student cuts out in self‑adhesive paper the following figures:
- six squares with the sides of 2 cm,
- two rectangles with the dimensions of 2 cm by 3 cm,
- two rectangles with the dimensions of 2 cm by 6 cm,
- two rectangles with the dimensions of 3 cm by 6 cm,
- two equilateral triangles with the side length of 3 cm,
- three rectangles with the dimensions of 3 cm by 5 cm.

- two equilateral triangles with the side length of 3 cm,
- three rectangles with the dimensions of 3 cm by 5 cm.

The figures will be used during the summarising task.

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: discovering the notion of the netnetnet of the right prismright prismright prism. The students are going to learn how to draw the netnetnet of the right prismright prismright prism and to identify the type of the prism.

Revision of the definition of the right prismright prismright prism and its elements.

Proceduremf57deea21a304ec8_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher explains that the students can observe different kinds of right prisms in around them, for example: the block of flats, the wardrobe, the dice.mf57deea21a304ec8_1527752256679_0The teacher explains that the students can observe different kinds of right prisms in around them, for example: the block of flats, the wardrobe, the dice.

Task 1
Students analyse the material in the Interactive illustration. They are going to see what elements the netnetnet of the prism consists of.

[Interactive illustration]

After finishing the task the students present the observation results by answering the following questions:

How many squares does the netnetnet of the cubecubecube consist of?
How many figures does the right hexagonal prism consist of? What kind of figures are they?
Does the prism have only one netnetnet?

The student should come up with the following conclusions:

- the netnetnet of the prism consists of the rectangles and two other polygons,
- some of the polygons that the netnetnet of the prism is constructed of have got the common edges,
- the number of the rectangles belonging to the netnetnet of the prism depends on the polygonpolygonpolygon of the basebasebase.

The teacher distributes the models of the prism whose nets can be unfolded. The students are going to become familiar with the shape of netnetnet of the prisms.

Task 2
The students cut the boxes they have brought in order to get their nets. They describe what figures the nets are made of.

Task 3
The students draw the netnetnet of the prism with the dimensions: 4 cm 4cm  2cm.

Task 4
The students look at the drawings and answer the following questions: mf57deea21a304ec8_1527712094602_0look at the drawings and answer the following questions:

What is the name of the prism whose netnetnet is shown?
How many faces does this prism have?
How many basebasebase edges does this prism have?
How many vertices does it have?

An extra task

Design the netnetnet of the prism with the five‑star basebasebase. Cut it out of paper and glue together. Describe the elements it is made of.

Lesson summarymf57deea21a304ec8_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusions to memorize.

- The netnetnet of the right prismright prismright prism consists of two polygons which are the bases of the prism and the rectangles which are its faces.
- The number of the rectangles depends on the type of the prism basebasebase, for example: the netnetnet of the right prismright prismright prism with the pentagonal basebasebase consists of two pentagons and five rectangles.
