Introductionmb0500535013f43de_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher asks chosen students to revise information about linear functionlinear functionlinear function
– definition of the function and properties of its plot.

Proceduremb0500535013f43de_1528446435040_0Procedure

In the Internet, students look for information about coefficients a and b from the formula of the linear functionlinear functionlinear function y = ax + b.

They present obtained information and together wonder how the slope of the function affects the location of its plot in the coordinate system.

[Illustration 1]

Based on the drawing, they write the formula for the slope of a linear function whose slope goes through points A = (xIndeks dolny A, yIndeks dolny A) and B = (xIndeks dolny B, yIndeks dolny B):

a=yByAxBxA

- The number a is the slope of the function f(x) = ax + b, the number b is the Y interceptY interceptY intercept.

- The slope is a quotient of the difference of two values of the linear function by the difference of corresponding arguments.mb0500535013f43de_1527752263647_0- The slope is a quotient of the difference of two values of the linear function by the difference of corresponding arguments.

Task
Students work individually, using computers. Their task is to observe the way of calculating the slope of a linear function using the formulated formula.

[Geogebra applet]

The teacher divides students into 4 persons groups that work using the JIGSAW method. Each member of the group gets different task from the tasks below. After solving the tasks, students gather in groups that were doing the same task. They discuss the solutions and clarify any doubts. Then, they return to the initial groups and present the solutions to other members.

Task
In the picture there is a plot of the linear functionplot of the linear functionplot of the linear function. Calculate the slope of this function and give its formula.

[Illustration 2]

Task
Point P (1, 3) belongs to the plot of the linear function y = ax + b. Calculate a and b knowing that a + b = 8.

Task
There are points A (2, 1), B (3, 2), C (-1, 2). Through which two points goes a line that is a plot of the linear function whose slope is negative?mb0500535013f43de_1527752256679_0There are points A (2, 1), B (3, 2), C (-1, 2). Through which two points goes a line that is a plot of the linear function whose slope is negative?

Task
Calculate value of the slope of a linear functionlinear functionlinear function f knowing point A (-3, 1) belongs to the plot of the function and that f(x) = (2m + 1)x - 4. The teacher evaluates students’ work and clarifies doubts.

An extra task:
The linear function f is described with the formula f(x) = (3 - m)x - 4. Identify values of m for which the slope of this function is a negative number.

Lesson summarymb0500535013f43de_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the revision exercises.

Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise.
