Multiplying the decimal fractions by the natural numbers
Mnożenie ułamków dziesiętnych przez liczby naturalne
Learning objectives
You will discover the method of multiplication of the decimals by the natural numbers.
Learning effect
You do the mental multiplication of the decimal fraction by the natural numbers.
You multiply the decimal fractions by the natural numbers using written method.
You use English to describe the method of multiplication the decimals by the natural numbers.
Prepare for the lesson:
a set of 10 cards, one of the following numbers is written on each of them: 2 ; 3 ; 4 ; 5 ; 10 ; 60 ; 100 ; 700 ; 1000 ; 8000;
a set of 10 cards, one of the following numbers is written on each of them: 0,004 ; 0,013 ; 0,01 ; 0,09 ; 0,12 ; 0,2 ; 0,5 ; 1,1 ; 1,5 ; 2,2;
a calculator.
Revise the written method of multiplying the natural numbersnatural numbers.
Draw the table with four rows and four columns. Write the following operations and their results calculated mentally in the first column:
2 ∙ 3
11 ∙ 5
12 ∙ 12
20 ∙ 8
Write the following operation in the second column:
0,2 ∙ 3
1,1 ∙ 55
12 ∙ 1,2
20 ∙ 0,8
Write the following operation in the third column:
0,02 ∙ 3
0,11 ∙ 55
12 ∙ 0,12
20 ∙ 0,08
Write the following operation in the fourth column:
0,002 ∙ 3
0,011 ∙ 55
12 ∙ 0,012
20 ∙ 0,008
Use the calculators to calculate the operations in the second, the third and the fourth columns.
Consider:
What are the differences between the results in the same row of the table?
What does the numbernumber of the digits after the decimal point depend on?
What method can be used to calculate the productproduct of the decimal fraction and the natural numbernumber?
Note, that:
The results of the row of the table differ only in the numbernumber of the digits after the decimal point.
The number of the digits after the decimal point depends on the numbernumber of the decimal digits of the decimal fraction that is multiplied.
To multiply the decimal fraction by the natural number we multiply these numbers first, ignoring the decimal point. Next, we place the decimal point in the productproduct to get the same numbernumber of the decimal digits both in the productproduct and the decimal fraction
.
Using the gained information multiply the decimal fractionsdecimal fractions by the natural numbersnatural numbers.
Calculate mentally:
a) 7 ∙ 0,12
b) 0,004 ∙ 15
c) 0,9 ∙ 8
d) 0,035 ∙ 2
Use the written multiplicationwritten multiplication to calculate:
354 ∙ 7 ; 2004 ∙ 63 ; 78 ∙ 1123.
Use the calculator to calculate the following productproduct:
35,4 ∙ 7 ; 2,004 ∙ 63 ; 78 ∙ 11,23.
Consider:
What is the difference between the products of 354 ∙ 7 and 35,4 ∙ 7?
And between the products 2004 ∙ 63 and 2,004 ∙ 63 or the products of 78 ∙ 1123 and 78 ∙ 11,23?
What does the numbernumber of the digits after the decimal point depend on?
What written method should we use to calculate the multiplication of the decimal fraction and the natural numbernumber?
Note, that:
The results of the products differ only in the numbernumber of the digits after the decimal point.
The number of the digit after the decimal point depends on the numbernumber of digits in the decimal fraction which is multiplied.
To multiply the decimal fraction by the natural number we multiply these numbers first ignoring the decimal point. Next, we place the decimal point in the productproduct to get the same numbernumber of the decimal digits both in the productproduct and the decimal fraction.
Using the gained information multiply the decimal fractionsdecimal fractions by the natural numbersnatural numbers. Use calculator to check the results.
Calculate using the written multiplicationwritten multiplication:
a) 408,3 ∙ 5
b) 7009,11 ∙ 12
c) 9,8539 ∙ 31
Adam bought 12 notebooks for 3,25 PLN each and 9 pens for 2,2 PLN each. Calculate how much money Adam spent on the shopping.
Watch the illustration to do the following task.
Answer the following questions:
a) How much do we pay for 9 bottles of the mineral water?
b) How much do we pay for 4 chocolate bars and 3 packets of biscuits?
c) How much more should we pay for 5 kilos of bananas in comparison to 2 kilos of apples?
Shuffle the cards you have prepared for the lesson and put them into two piles on the desks. Draw one card and calculate mentally the productproduct of the drawn numbers. If the answer is correct you get the point. If you make the mistake you lose the point. Use the calculator to check the correctness of the calculation.
Remember:
To multiply the decimal fraction by the natural numbernumber we multiply these numbers first ignoring the decimal point. Next, we place the decimal point in the productproduct to get the same numbernumber of the decimal digits both in the productproduct and the decimal fraction.
Do the summarising tasks.
