Pride and Prejudice remains one of the most read and recognisable of Jane Austen’s novels. It is the story of the Bennet family, whose life changes after the arrival of a wealthy unmarried man in the neighbourhood. Talkative Mrs Bennet hopes to marry off one of her five daughters, while Mr Bennet remains sceptical about it. The story of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet can be seen in the numerous film and television adaptations and is eagerly read not only by women but also by men. In this section you are going to analyse a fragment from the first chapter of the book.
