Race walking has a long history as an Olympic sport, as it debuted at the 1908 Olympic Games. Race walking has different distances (usually from 5 to 50 km). And if you think it is nothing but a nice walk, you are wrong. Race walking is a very demanding activity because athletes have to walk in a certain way, with one foot making contact with the ground all the time. Poland is proud to have a few top Olympic race walkers such as Robert Korzeniowski with four Olympic gold medals and Dawid Tomala, who won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Now, we are speeding up a bit, with skateboarding as an Olympic sport. It made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 Games and it’s on the programme of the next Olympic Games as well. In Tokyo, the youngest professional skateboarder in the world, Sky Brown, aged 13, won a bronze medal for Great Britain.

Another new member of the Olympic family is sport climbing. Although it has become very popular over the past two decades, it appeared for the first time at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The athletes compete in all three disciplines of sport climbing: lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering. Bouldering is the most difficult one. Its objective is to deal with as many obstacles on a climbing route as possible in the least number of attempts. It cannot be easy! In Tokyo, Aleksandra Mirosław, a Polish athlete, broke a World Record in speed climbing with her unbelievable 6.84 seconds!

Now something that might be surprising to some of you – BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle are now both real‑life Olympic sports. While BMX Racing has been on the Olympic programme since 2008, BMX Freestyle was added as an Olympic event for men and women at Tokyo 2020. Riders have sixty seconds to show their skills while doing the tricks on walls, box jumps and spines. The more difficult and creative their tricks are, the higher score they get.

Now, onto trampolining! Although it looks fun, and trampoline competitors are highly trained athletes, trampolining is one of the most dangerous Olympic sports, because of many accidents and falls that happen. It has been a part of the Games’ programme since 2000. Trampolinists perform at least ten different acrobatic manoeuvres, with five judges scoring their efforts. Scoring is based on the difficulty of the jumps and on the total of seconds spent in the air.

A bit of history, now. Believe it or not, Tug of War was part of the Olympic Games for 20 years, from 1900 to 1920. The competition rules said that two teams of eight athletes had to pull their opponents by six feet to win, or as close to six feet as they could within a five‑minute time limit. So next time, when it comes to Tug of War on your school sports day, feel free to call yourself an Olympic athlete.
